Chapter 3 Review, MATH 318
This is a list of topics likely to appear on the chapter 3 quiz. The
quiz will cover key concepts and formulae -- you're expected to
memorize the formula for finding the expected value of a discrete
random variable, but not the more obscure formula for computing
probabilities of Poisson distributions. This list is not
guaranteed to be complete.
- Definitions/concepts: Random variables, discrete and continuous.
Probability functions (discrete) and probability density functions
(continuous). Expected value. Standard deviation. Binomial,
Poisson, normal, standard normal, uniform and exponential probability
distributions.
 - Formulae: Expected value of a discrete random variable. Expected
value of a binomial distribution. Standard deviation of a discrete
random variable.
 - Basic skills: Computing using complementary probabilities and
using tables to look up probabilities. Computing probabilities given
formulae for binomial distributions, Poisson distributions, and
exponential distributions. Converting a random variable from normal
to standard normal given the formula.
