This is going to the IFC summer rush list because it is the best way for me
to get this information to the individuals who are responsible for managing
your dormitory license during the summer months.

If necessary, please pass this information along to the appropriate person
in your living group.

DORMITORY LICENSES:

Each MIT ILG is required by their local community to have in their
possession a valid dormitory license. These licenses are renewed annually
and are preceded by a building inspection by the local authorities. Each
house must pass this inspection before its dormitory license will be
renewed. A house may fail its inspection for any number of reasons but
usually it will be due to fire safety and/or egress violations.

Possessing a current dormitory license and having your life-safety systems
monitored and inspected regularly provide the surety the Institute needs to
assure your parents and the parents of entering freshmen that MIT ILGs are
safe places for our students to live. Since MIT requires each ILG to have
a valid dormitory license to qualify as approved housing for freshmen,
there are consequences when an ILG's license has expired and the ILG has
not taken the appropriate steps to ensure its renewal.

CONSEQUENCES OF NOT RENEWING YOUR DORMITORY LICENSE:

This year MIT will allow your ILG to rush and house freshmen as long as the
dormitory license fee has been paid for 1997-98 and progress is being made
towards passing the egress inspection.

However, ILGs that have not paid their 1997-98 renewal fee will not be
given Class of 2001 mailing labels nor permitted to mail to incoming
freshmen until the fee has been paid.

ILGs that have not passed their annual inspection and renewed their 1997-98
dormitory license will be placed on "site probation" immediately following
the closing of their rush desk or Friday, August 29, whichever comes first.
"Site probation" means that no activities or events - specifically no
PARTIES or MIXERS - may be conducted on the premises until the dormitory
license has been renewed.

STATUS OF DORMITORY LICENSES FOR EACH ILG:

(based on information available to me as of 6/25/97)

* Brookline ILGs (ET & ZBT):

I assume that your license has already been renewed for 1997 but I haven't
seen it. You will need to bring a copy with you when you come to pick up
your mailing labels.

*  Cambridge ILGs:

All Cambridge ILGs have passed the City inspection and renewed their
licenses. The new dormitory licenses have been placed in your mailboxes in
W20-549 in an interdepartmental envelope addressed to "housemanager".

*  Boston ILGs:

These ILGs have all renewed their dormitory licenses for 1997-98 and are in
good standing.

AEPi, AP, Fiji, PKT, PLP, SN and SPE.

________________________________________

These ILGs have paid their dormitory license renewal fee for 1997-98 but
have not passed their inspection. They will receive rush mailing labels
and may mail to freshmen but will be on "site probation" after rush unless
they have passed their egress inspection and picked up their dormitory
license.

BTP, CP, DTD, DU, LCA, ND, PKS, PSK, SAE, SC and TEP.

_________________________________________

These ILGs have produced no evidence that they have either paid their
1997-98 dormitory license renewal fee nor passed their inspection. They
will not be given their rush mailing labels not permitted to mail to the
Class of 2001 until the renewal fee has been paid and they have reported
the status of their egress inspection.

AXO, Fenway House, PDT, TC and TXi.

If you have paid the renewal fee to the City of Boston yourself, please
show me the receipt.

Student House, although not required to have a dormitory license, must pass
an annual egress inspection. Until the status of their egress inspection
has been reported to me, they will not be given mailing labels or permitted
to mail to freshmen.

_________________________________________

I apologize if I am in error regarding any individual ILG's status. If you
have any questions, please call me as soon as possible.

Regards,

Neal
