If your old directory was /mit/foobar on CHARON, it is now /afs/sipb/user/foobar. This was done in preparation for the demise of CHARON this month. Currently all your CHARON files have been copied into this new filesystem. Old copies still exist on CHARON in case there are problems. The new filesystems are fascist - you are the only person who has access to them. This was done because the protections on individual files don't mean much under AFS; only the ACLs on directories have meaning. In order to gain write access to your filesystem, you will need to run the "aklog" program to authenticate yourself to the file server. Run: /afs/sipb/service/@sys/aklog sipb.mit.edu You should put this in your .login file. Tiam venis la ideo uzi Esperanton, kiun la verkinto mem lernis kaj volis disvastigi. Post zigzaga procedo tamen decidi^gis ke la tuto de skriboj en la filmo--ekde prezento de la titolo, subtitoloj law^capitraj kaj de ^cefaj stabanoj, skriboj sur nigra tabulo, presa^joj en presejo, penda^joj de butikoj ktp--estu en Esperanto (tamen aperis kelkaj kaprica^joj de desegnistoj!). If you are running X11R4, you may find this instructive for more general application. I am assuming you are an experienced Unix user with access to the X11R4 distribution. If not, work with someone who is. First, you will need an ISO-8859-3 font. X11 fonts are distributed in Adobe's `BDF' format, which is an ASCII format that can be edited with any Unix text editor. It is not hard to modify an existing font to include the Latin-3 characters; the codes for these can be found in /usr/include/X11/keysymdef.h. At the end of this message is a context diff which can be applied to 8x13.bdf (found in the X11 sources) to produce an Esperanto version of that fixed width font. Note that this is not a full ISO 8859-3 font, since the non-Esperanto accented characters are still missing. If you cannot find 8x13.bdf, summon your X11 guru. Once you have your BDF source file (say, 8x13E.bdf), you can convert it to a more compact format (SNF format) with the command bdftosnf 8x13E.bdf > 8x13E.snf (bdftosnf should be among the other X11 binaries in your search path) Now, make a directory for your personal fonts (say, $HOME/lib/xfonts) and put 8x13E.snf there. Go there and type `mkfontdir' (another X11 utility that is supposed to be installed). This will create a fonts.dir file to map the formal name of this font ( -Misc-Fixed-Medium-R-Normal--13-120-75-75-C-80-ISO8859-3 ) to the file name. Finally, tell your X11 server that this directory is part of your font path, with xset fp+ $HOME/lib/xfonts You may want to add that line to your .xinitrc or .xsession file You can now display Esperanto characters. Type xterm -fn '*-ISO8859-3' If you have a file with Latin-3 text in it (a Uuencoded sample is appended), just cat that file to the screen (in your new xterm window, of course) and watch it appear. Creating such a file requires that an X application map appropriate key events to insert the right code. Your .Xdefaults file can contain just such mappings for a variety of toolkit applications such as Xedit. For example, my .Xdefaults file contains the following lines: *Text.Translations: #override\n\ :Metac: insert-string(0xe6)\n\ :MetaC: insert-string(0xc6)\n\ :Metag: insert-string(0xf8)\n\ :MetaG: insert-string(0xd8)\n\ :Metah: insert-string(0xb6)\n\ :MetaH: insert-string(0xa6)\n\ :Metaj: insert-string(0xbc)\n\ :MetaJ: insert-string(0xac)\n\ :Metas: insert-string(0xfe)\n\ :MetaS: insert-string(0xde)\n\ :Metau: insert-string(0xfd)\n\ :MetaU: insert-string(0xdd) This causes ALL applications that use the Athena Text widget (including Xedit, Xmh, Xcalendar, and many others) to insert, for example, c-circumflex (ISO 8859-3 hex code e6) when Meta-c is struck. If your font in that application is a Latin-3 font, the key will echo on the screen in just the way you expect. Thus, you can create an Esperanto file very easily indeed by typing something like: xedit -xrm "xedit*font: *-ISO8859-3" myfile.esp Some warnings: on SunOS (at least), the `vi' editor is not comfortable with 8-bit characters, and will strip that top bit when it rewrites a file. Once you get Latin-3 characters into a file, keep it away from vi! GNU Emacs is safe, but normally displays 8-bit characters in octal rather than at `face value' (patches have been devised to solve this). Unix electronic mail software will rarely bear 8-bit characters. This is why my example below has been uuencoded. A filter to translate Latin-3 to and from ASCII representations (like ^c or cx) can be used for transmission. I suppose we can expect to see one soon (right, Karl?). You can use the X resource mechanism (.Xdefaults) in astonishing ways. For example, I customize the contributed `xcalendar' program with things like: xcalendar*daynames.SUN.label: DIMA so that the calendar operates entirely in Esperanto.
