"I am astounded ... at the wonderful power you have developed - and terrified
at the thought that so much hideous and bad music may be put on record forever."
Arthur Sullivan, on seeing Edison's talking machine in 1888
OggSQUISH is a general purpose compressed, digitized audio storage
format. It is designed to be faster, more flexible and higher
quality than the now ubiquitous MPEG, as well as surpass the
functionality and durability of upcoming next-generation compressed
audio formats such as AT&T's PAC and NTT's TwinVQ. In addition, the
Ogg bitstream specification is to remain solidly in the public domain
and free versions of the Ogg library and basic applications will be
available at all times (for non-commercial
uses). In the mid-term, OggSQUISH will also incorporate ongoing
video compression research to become a truly integrated, multimedia
compression standard.

- If anything in the above paragraph sounded interesting, or you
want to know why you should use OggSQUISH instead of some other
current audio format in your projects, you might want to
read a more complete overview of the OggSQUISH
compressed audio format. This document serves to replace the
out-of-date FAQ from Ogg versions 0.92 and before.
- An OggSQUISH Update page concerns
what is immediately going on in the OggSQUISH project (we do not
have QuickCam photos of programmers working, and we're proud of it).
- This OggSQUISH project strategy page
details where we want OggSQUISH to be in 6 months, a year and a few
years from now, as well as the functionality you can expect from Ogg
in the near future.
- OggSQUISH is not freeware, but is freely available for personal
and non-profit use. See the distribution
terms for more details and information about commercial licensing.
- OggSQUISH beta release source code and
executables. This is a supported, beta release version of
OggSquish, including a conversion/deconversion application, direct
playback application and full source for the fully
portable OggSQUISH linkable/embeddable library.
- Documentation! Various documents that
describe aspects of the OggSquish library, programming language and
applications.
