Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 8612.08 The meeting was called to order at 19:42 by sp'uh. In attendance were Voting members: spook, jtkohl, rfrench, carla, srz, llzien, theschun, pww, ambar, wesommer, hyland, chariot, opus, andre, balamac, tytso, monkey, mer Associate members: shahid, henry, holtzman Non-voting members: Prospectives: george, sthumble Guests: Treasurer's Report: We're not renewing our subscription to "Electronics" magazine, due to lack of money. Student Spending: Month-to-date:$ 2,669.70 Year-to-date: $ 18,613.46 SIPB/SIPBADMIN Spending: MTD: $ 5,602.26 YTD: $ 25,402.24 The weird excess of spending by SIPB can be attributed to SIPB_daemon using a few thousand in the first three days... Chairman's Report: get ready guys, he's gonna flame... An amendment is in the process of being put together. It's the one concerning changing the date of officer elections. The EC will be meeting about it soon. Office Report: Carla cleaned it up, it looked *really* nice at 7pm, no matter what ken says. Office managers aren't responsible for random wires from terminals. srz will contact gill pratt re: removing the PDP. Athena Report: Bryan Moser has not yet written the proposal for the Athena Committee. toehold is being replaced pretty soon. We seem to have more than enough air conditioning for two more workstations. ambar: "Anyway..." (spook bangs gavel real hard because people aren't listening) Athena suggestions: monkey made posters and will get boxes. Computer Services: Flamage about too much text processing, rs1, etc. on charon. ambar lectures on how to use toehold to make workstations do random scribe jobs. theschun makes a comment about Tex environment variables for workstations. The final verdict is to talk to specifically to the people who are being bad, especially when they are doing it. We will also lean slightly in favor of SIPB members, since it draws people to man the office who don't have accounts other than w20, though spook is not happy about it. Because of this and the fact that charon is running on 3/4 memory, the major SIPB project (discuss) had to move to grape-nehi. Motion: people not doing mainly sipb-work or development work (incl. Next House 2west) will be punted, but they will be notified *before* thursday (before classes end). (Bang). These people will be contacted individually. The purge will occur near the beginning of Next term. Then reevaluation of the load problem will occur. If there are still problems, more drastic measures may be taken, i.e. putting scribe, etc. on games control or removing them. seconded: "yes" by 16. opposed by 2. passed. (also, this is supposed to only be voted on by EC, but all the Ec voted affirmative). We should take a closer look at what is getting printed on the apple laserwriter. Randoms are printing normal text processing stuff. Discussion as to whether the laserwriter cartridges are worth the manpower to get refilled, since we seem to have a lot of money from IS and refilling entails going to Somerville. Consensus is no. Sec. will check up on Mr. Greek12 about not using the laserwriter. Telecommunications Report: Shahid volunteers to drive over to Boston to fix the Mac. Dec has been called re: vt240, and w20 pww is in the process of getting rid of excess hardware. (Equipment exchange) Spook got another call about the w91-102? ADM terminal maintenance problem. It seems to be a phone number mis-read. Switch boxes must wait until we decide how to arrange the office. There are questions as to who is responsible for seeing that the 258-SIPB works. Publications Report: 66 only has inessential guides, fishbowl is missing everything, carla and llzien and pww put a lot of all documentations in w20. ambar wants input as to insessential guide. The scribe types the default to double sided have been losing. This causes problems with weird margins on the x9700. Firstly, double sided gets alternately spaced margins, secondly, there is a bug that makes the alternate margins ridiculously small and large. Sp'uh once again bangs the gavel *realllyyyy* hard beacuse too many people aren'y listening. (I only mention this because it reverberates unpleasantly in my ear.) R/O Report: IAP Report: Carla mentions that people who are leading courses might want to ask for help before all sipb goes away for vacation. There are not very many people who've signed up for SIPB IAP courses. Other: holtzman: How come we never have s SIPB party? carla: if it's during IAP I'll do it. Bang, Bang, BANG!!!&*^(^&*%^#@ When giving out accounts, *register* and add_student. Also, give people the NETS and NUMS and emacs wall charts, new users are otherwise basically cluless. Poor confused people have been returning to the office, not able to log in because their accounts haven't been registered. Many thanks to shahid for volunteering to drive out to Boston with pww to fix Mac. Other Other: ambar: the end of the term sux Carla: The athena consultants party is Thursday, 9pm, EC talbot lounge, volunteers consultants are invited. The meeting was adjourned at 20:3 Minutes taken and submitted by mer.
