Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 06/22/87 The meeting was called to order at 1934 by spook. In attendance were Voting members: srz, spook, wesommer, tytso, hyland, csmith, jtkohl, ambar, nlgilman, rfrench, chariot, eichin Associate members: Non-voting members: Prospectives: Guests: cjsmith Treasurer's Report: Ambar says 'What treasurer?' Imagine her surprise when she sees Tim sitting behind her. SIPBADMIN spending is rather high. Numbers are fine (and we believe him). Treasurer will look into extending accounts to next year. Student Spending: Month-to-date: Year-to-date: SIPB/SIPBADMIN Spending: MTD: YTD: Chairman's Report: Hi. Went to talk to Jim Bruce again today. And Carla didn't. They were discussing access to 5th floor (private elevator? -ambar). A lot of people haven't made plans yet, and it's not clear what is going on. Need proposals for use of typewriter rooms (music practice rooms?) Some of them might not be ours. There will be some Deans' offices up there temporarily (15 months). Section to the left of the former entrance and Athena terminal room will be offices. There may not be very much security, and they might not have it open during non-working hours. Nobody knows for sure. Jim Bruce is trying to get the space for us by arguing that we will be a benefit to the nearby Athena cluster. Not sure how much space we will be getting, Ambar suggests drawing a lower limit. Jim Bruce will have find what else is going on with the space. Dispatch might be in the Lobby area. (where the elevators are now). And that is life. Office Report: Office was slightly flooded this morning. Tim called FIXIT. No swimming allowed. Looks better now. Slightly brownish ice was removed out of the freezer over the weekend (thanks to Ken, Carol and Rob K). Office is a mess. (What else is new? -Ambar). It's getting serious. Ken wants a cleanup effort after the meeting. Where is the Mac going? WMBR When is it going? Not soon enough. Athena Report: Still there. DEC dropped price on VS2000 to $5500 (by a factor of 2). Steve asked DEC to increase the quantity, keep the dollar amount the same (~1200 x 2 = a lot). 2 year waiting period delay for shipments to the real world. ('We are not the real world' -- John Kohl). 5.0 is going out to the staff world Thursday. E40 is getting shuffled. Telecommunications was not informed of this in advance. Random piece of Athena trivia: there might be an Athena beach trip sometime soon. (Do you know much how much trouble this may cause? -- Eichin). Rob says it's not a good idea to go to an amusement park because Droogs and Watchmakers might throw each other off the roller coaster. Binkley now has 6 meg. It hasn't stopped crashing though. Bill talks about shuffling memory cards. Computer Services: No computers are being serviced. Rob was eavesdropping on consultants meeting. Marc Campos came back and started flaming about discuss. They really want aref and chaining. They also have to type too many keys. Discussion about disk space and RVD's. Ken wants to put the library stuff (libss & libet) onto the RVD. Can we GC RVD stuff? Charon needs rearranging. /site/sipb might move over to /usr/local. We could get more space by moving people's homedirs back to where they originally were (now that NFS is coming around). Saturday for 4.3+NFS for charon? charon needs free space to take over what's on Multics right now. Telecommunications Report: Trying to get some thinwire stuff for the workstations. Debra Myrick & Dennis Baron are dragging their feet. NFS hoses the net real bad. When people screw up, they screw up everybody else. Publications Report: We're out of discuss documentation. R/O Report: Sample letter delivered to UASO for their stamp of approval. Pretty much the same as last year, except we're not maintaining a terminal room in the student center any more. IAP Report: It's getting closer. Other: Athena is punting the random creation of uid's on workstation. Carla was wearing yellow today, Rob wasn't. There's now a C version of WEB. Other Other: Treasurer has quite a sunburn. The meeting was adjourned at 2025. Minutes taken and submitted by srz.
