Carla's Report: lots on intro stuff, welcoming freshlings. We try to provide services and "make up where Athena is lacking". Notably, modems for use with Athena, "discuss" which is a conferencing system, laserwriter service (postscript), widely available high quality printouts from the x9700, were instrumental in opening up the student center terminal room for general use, help users, are open at many weird hours. If you are interested in writing neat and spiffo type software, you can do it here, and if it works, we can help distribute it. We also provide file transfer services and can give you a Multics account. Part of becoming a member is coming around the office and getting to know how to help people. You also should get to know the members. Office Report: Don't leave half empty cans around or garbage. Be careful if you eat in the office, not to spill, etc. Athena Report: jis, "printing is screwed up all over athena". aaron says that printing was working a few days ago to the x9700 only from the sipb office machines. jis says we cannot move bloom beacon to the student center, he will get a new machine but he has not given any indication as to the time frame. (for those who don't know Jeff Schiller, username "jis", he is a network god.) 66 and w20 are now open. The registration account procedure does not work yet. It will work on or after Reg Day. Next Monday there is an Athena Open House. They want us to have a table there. Computer Services: We are working on a way to continue to give computer time to graduate students. they are currently using Multics, but MIT is shutting down Multics on Dec 31, since Honeywell gave up the Multics project. (hi! do you read this whole report?) Telecommunications Report: Jon Rochlis is busy with the Building 11 gateway. Publications Report: We are writing documentation for discuss (the conferencing system), and we wrote the "Inessential Guide to Project Athena" which tells you a lot of things which are not in the "Essential" guides put out by Athena, but you really should know. R/O Report: The computer tour is tomorrow night 7:30. Meets in lobby 7. Afterwards, there will be a talk by Athena's postmaster who keeps electronic mail going. IAP Report: Usually during IAP we teach a couple of courses. There used to be a LISP course. Recently there have been a Multics Internals course and a Unix internals course. Other: An ARPA net port on an IMP costs $3500/month. Charon will be around for quite a while longer. (charon is the Athena machine run by SIPB.) Last Thursday, jis said that we could get new NFS directories on Tuesday. Other Other: We introduce ourselves. Carol in Sunburned. LSC is getting more and more SIPB members. Any suggestions as to what SIPB members should yell at LSC movies, to find other members? An RT can reboot itself 4 times in the course of a normal SIPB meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 20:20. Minutes taken and submitted by mer.
