To: sipb-minutes Subject: Minutes of 88.01.04 Reply-To: ambar@athena.mit.edu Full-Name: Jean Marie Diaz --text follows this line-- Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 88.01.04 The meeting was called to order at 7:32pm by der Chair. In attendance were Voting members: kerr, llzien, Terry Donahue, tytso, amdehon, chariot, amgreene, jtkohl, srz, raeburn (late), monkey, csmith, cjsmith, amehta Associate members: ambar, rlk Non-voting members: Prospectives: jik, Linda Cordella Guests: Treasurer's Report: "We never have a treasurer. Why do we bother?" -- der Chair. Student Spending: Month-to-date: Year-to-date: SIPB/SIPBADMIN Spending: MTD: YTD: Chairman's Report: WHERE'S THE DIALUP SERVER? JIS (on the phone) says that it would be up if he hadn't promised to take Karen to an Indian restaurant. (The excuses are getting more and more creative.) We need to take charon out of the dialup business so that it can enter the grad student business. Office Report: It got waxed. MUCH more crowded than the past couple weeks. People are mumbling about moving things around. People flame about what to move for a while. Athena Report: What are we doing about grad students? Two things have to be done first: 1) a policy statement dealing with what they can use it for, limited number of slots, etc. We want to give this out to the people we give accounts to. 2) we need a on-line template, so that we can get the necessary information from grad students, and mail it to Carla, who will put it into the SMS database, so that they can run register. Ambar volunteers to get this done, silly her. Computer Services: Multics services were terminated January 2, 1988, 0900 hours EST. SIPB_admin.SIPBADMIN was the last paying customer logged in. JIS was the last account logged in. Various old SIPB members were in W91; everyone else was in the SIPB office. Taps were not played. People went to IHOP afterwards. Telecommunications Report: Discussion about holding a "terminal lottery" with the vt100's and modems currently lying around the office. Should ask for a deposit before they leave the office. Since we need them for R/O week, we should probably loan them out each term. More frequently is really a waste of everyone's time. Publicity: probably just mail to bboard and usermsgs is sufficient. Limit the lottery to students and SIPB members. Ken points out that coordinating this (keeping track of serial numbers, MIT Property numbers, locations, &etc) overlaps heavily with the "terminal chairbeing's" job.... Hi, Carol. Our phones are working. Ringworld is up, but no one knows if the dialups are working. Publications Report: John Kohl has printed up a new draft of the Inessential Guide. It's available for markup in the office. Ideas for new sections: prying stuff out of Hesiod with hesinfo. explanation of why you need /etc/athena/nfsid R/O Report: Whazzat? IAP Report: It's here! Postscript class Thursday, at 1pm, LaTeX starts next week. The Athena series starts tomorrow. Other: Carla wants shirt orders by Friday, with money. Reminder: elections will be next month, and most officers will not be returning. The office manual badly needs updating (it still talks about the spinwriter, heh heh). If anyone wants to make/suggest changes, send mail to the Chair. Other Other: "Multics is alive, well, and living on the Riveria." "Jeff's become a Time Freak." The meeting was adjourned at 8:18pm. Minutes taken and submitted by AMBAR.
