Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 1/25/88 The meeting was called to order at 19:39:00 by Raeburn. In attendance were Voting members: wesommer, eichin, raeburn ambar, monkey, csmith, balamac, jtkohl, cheshire, srz, hyland, rfrench, amgreene, amdehon, kerr Associate members: cjsmith Prospectives: jik, ayshames Guests: tron, Jeff Plum Treasurer's Report: Decision to erase spending stuff from minutes. Training in progress for apprentice treasurer. Chairman's Report: Srz, raeburn, monkey, and carla have meeting with Jim Bruce Wed at 1:30 to discuss graduate students. They might try to push for a graduate student cluster. The limiting factor claimed as the basis for the 50 graduate students getting athena accounts is keyboards, but this seems somewhat bizarre. One possibility is connecting extra terminals to DIALUP.MIT.EDU. If we get drives, and put them on charon maybe that will help. Office Report: No carla here. The office is crowded. Athena Report: Postscript interpreter is working better (unless your font less than is 90 points...). Wednesday afternoon athena is doing a run-through of the USENIX talks. There is a very slow encrypted rlogin program, now. Computer Services: We have a box of things for the MAC (including an official C compiler). Six new disks full of stuff. We are now backing up the MAC onto snorkelwacker. Check microcomputer center for MMU chip. We still have people trying to login to "charon" or "sipb" not "dialup" (M11-111-11). We should change the error message charon prints so confused people can be told about dialup. /bin/athena/attach and /bin/athena/detach on charon are no longer world executable because people doing the wrong thing can wedge charon. If nobody wants to hack the attach code to fix wedging problems, we will have to wait for rfrench's new version before this is fixed. Finger sipb@oliver for a good time. This should be moved to charon so we can finger sipb@sipb. Telecommunications Report: Meeting with Jim Bruce will cover dialups in 38, too. Ringworld is still losing. Publications Report: The rrn section of the Inessential Guide has been written by jik. Hesiod and discuss haven't been written yet. Jtkohl wants to send it to Graphic Arts by Wednesday. Eichin will send latex stuff at the same time. There will be a list in the Guide of interesting file systems if anyone has any to add to, talk to jtkohl. R/O Report: Defeaning silence. IAP Report: Last postscript class tomorrow. The postscript interpreter is in /mit/x++/psview/src/xpostps. Type A4 to get window displayed, or xpostps -c A4 to display a file. Emacs class is over. Extra copies of handouts in the room. Other: Jtkohl is working on a list of SFMarathon attendees. There is also a collection of grease being made. Other Other: Ambar got a license plate. ABC will be preempting the Music Awards for the State of the Union Address. The meeting was adjourned at 08:14:42. Minutes taken and submitted by kerr.
