Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 01/9/89 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by srz. In attendance were Voting members: jik amdehon kerr csmith srz jtidwell amgreene opus tytso amehta jh qjb (late) sharon (very very late) Associate members: jtkohl raeburn cjsmith wesomer jon Prospectives: bjaspan jcbourne fflam tja (Yvette Morgan) rei (very late) Guests: Sophia Ts'o Treasurer's Report: We will fund Nick Rockler to have 3 tapes read for him by Art Anger. They need to be read at 800 bpi for $50. CokeComm Report: We still have coke. Chairman's Report: Chairman is taking a year off, playing startup. Office Report: We're still having a leftover can problem. We should be complaining about our new User Accounts designation. We should worry about losing network access with the construction next door (jis warned us this was a possibility). Other Office Report: We need to think about plans for the W20 office. Dividers? Closets? Flame flame flame. Athena Report: The network is dead. See Telecommunications Report. Athena is not ready to deal with dialup so we're now running both dialup and dialup2. The easiest thing to do is modify the dialup motd to mention dialup2. dialup2 has more memory than dialup. The easiest way to divide the load on the machines is to display the load in the login banner and let the user select between the machines. athena will be buying 40 as yet unannounced dec workstations. 6.1 will be staff tested at some point around the end of the month. Party at the end of the month when scribe (temporarily) expires. Computer Services: laserprinter is fixed. If you need to replace the cartridge RTFI. Does sipb want to provide netnews to the entire campus? We would probably need a news machine for Tech Square as well as one for the rest of non-athena campus. We could get some machine from Tech Square through Tom Green. We would need another machine from IS or something. Telecommunications Report: See Athena Report. Publications Report: Only one Inessential Guide left. LaTeX Guides getting low. R/O Report: Getting Closer. IAP Report: Very very close. Only about 160-200 people showed up for amehta's C class today. Some had never programmed before, some had a lot more experience. The ones that have never seen a computer computer are going to have their own special class taught by srz. LaTeX course coming up next week T the 17th @12, R the 19th @7:30, and R the 26th at 7:30. We will order new guides by then as reference material. sharon will be a scribe reference for the LaTeX-class-for-those-who-know-scribe. Other people to help amehta would be appreciated. Postscript class first session tomorrow @2 in 36-155. Other: Talbot house - 16 people seem to think they can come possibly the first weekend in March. jis has voluneered to chaperone. Anyone interested in playing with an incredibly old somewhat broken hard drive? talk to bjaspan. Other Other: t shirts - send your requests to jtidwell before friday. ibm pcs are not totally useless - amgreene has turned his into an answering machine. jh wants snow here (Baltimore has it).
