Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 03/19/90 The meeting was called to order at 19:30:00 by amgreene. In attendance were Voting members: amgreene jcbourne leira amdehon dougie web jik mlbarrow tron marc blubaron jh dkk jtidwell Associate members: srz jtkohl jcb Non-voting members: Prospectives: cordelia cagoddar rasmith fxzane tanis defisard Guests: Treasurer's Report: Treasurer has rehearsal. CokeComm Report: Coke is here. CokeComm isn't. Chairman's Report: '() Office Report: Office is a pit! Mike, please flame. AC not fixed. Office is at the end of cooling system and therefore we get all of the air bubbles that like to knock against pipes/valves. Athena Report: Much laughter. Suggestion boxes: Boxes in W20, 11, 66; volunteers welcomed to help make boxes, to collect suggestions, and to enter them into the suggestions meetings. Building 11 network will (?) be brought down over Spring Break to split the network. Athena announced two new employees: Faculty liasion - dot Third-party software person - mbarrie Computer Services: Randy Sargent wants to buy a 200Meg drive and hook it up to one of our machines. In exchange he offers us half of it. SCSI board for the NeXT machine? On oliver or one of the PMaxes... do we want to be a scuzzy server? What happens when Randy Sargent goes away? He's going to give us 100Meg. Problems with hogging of machines? Would we be considering this if he wasn't giving us 100 Meg? Probably not. Lots of questions to be answered. Situation with Student Activities' workstations? Not changed. Lack of communication? File space, Athena waiting for SIPB to say where to put workstations, 4th Floor renovations... BloomBeacon: needs more swap space!! Options for upgrading? We aren't going to get more hardware unless we ask for it. Ask Peter Roden for a better machine. NNTD could be made smaller, so it doesn't take up as much swap space. Can't give News back to Athena. (We took it over 2-3 years ago.) It would be a bad thing to give it back. SOMEONE NEEDS TO BRING IT UP WITH PETER RODEN. We need more swap space. It has 3 drives, a TK50, 16 Meg swap space. Can we move discuss? We could buy drive and scuzzy controller. 62 Meg free on /usr/spool. 114 Meg from discuss. There is space. Needs to take it down, dump, repartition the drives, turn everything off, and restore everything. Ask Bill and Ted. [``Excellent!''] Can News be spread over a number of machines? Apparently not... Clarinet: anything new? No... haven't heard. Need to pursue getting Clarinet and the hardware to support it. m11-111-2 is getting into more of a time-sharing configuration. srz continues to work on it. When to move it? Move it right before it's operational. Over 3-4 weeks. Maybe do it over Spring Break when building 11 goes down. Do we want to get an MIT site license for SM ($600), a graphing package? Lots of nifty things... ask jh for more info. jh suggested it to Athena. dkk says that it was struck down by Athena: ridiculous to put in release because of negotiations for site license (they were confused as usual, jh already has the source code). Suggestion to make the demo available for people to play with. To get to demo version, attach -e earth:/u2 ; cd /earth/u2/sm/work ; more README for useful things to try. Telecommunications Report: Probable cause on modem pool lossage: some of the modems are misconfigured. Most of them are configured right. amgreene just always gets the flaky ones. User never knows which modem he's on. Can the software be fixed? Abstractions galore. Even the CISCO box doesn't know which modem... Something about switches. Publications Report: Restocked thanks to fxzane. R/O Report: marc hasn't turned in his R/O form for running Clearinghouse. IAP Report: '() Other: Ramand says hi. Motion to remove "SIPB has been moved" sign. Taken down. TeX class: 7 people, 2 hours, yesterday. SIPB sponsored seminars? Ways to publicize them? g-motd .... shell scripts... Generally good thing to do... Other Other: srz is now an evil software patenter. "Intellectual property": see dkk. napalm: quickly growing discuss meeting. Next week: jtidwell will run meeting. jik turned problem set into Guttag 4 minutes late and Guttag said that he'd put it on his secretary's desk and tell her that it was there on time. The meeting was adjourned at 20:23:44. Minutes taken and submitted by jcbourne.
