Q: Brad, how do you give out VMA accounts? A: I don't know. Q: Francis? A: You try to convince them that they really don't want one, then use the form in the drawer. Q: If someone comes and says that their Xscreensaver is locked and won't unlock, what do you tell them to do? Francis-A: Use xfree and flame at jik Q: What purpose has precedence over games on the Mac? Francis-A: Everything... file transfer. Canonical-A: Used as a paperweight. There are no more nominations. The vote: 18 votes for marc. 1 for Bobby in User Accounts. Now we need to replace marc on the EC. The votes: bjaspan 12 fxzane 1 gamadrid 1 tanis 1 warlord 2 ^^^^^^^^^^ Chairman reviews the changes (to the By-Laws) that were made at the EC meeting on Sunday. Also announces the decision of the EC to form a committee to discuss/update the "Purpose of the SIPB". bjaspan volunteered to coordinate, not chair, this committee. If you are interested in serving on the committee, talk to bjaspan, who will compile a list of people interested in being on this committee. Also discussed at the meeting on Sunday: How to make the grilling less frightening; the fluff-content of the meeting. With regard to the latter, it was generally agreed that the fluff-content is not that bad. Office Report: Something died in the refrigerator. Stapler problems again. Stapler now lives at the back of the room. MIT Computing Report: The emacs bug is allegedly fixed by a mid-release patch to the packs. Computer Services: qjb wants to defer discussion on the naming of the binary directories. (see below) ClariNet: still in a garden-wait; waiting for more support; currently EECS=360, Athena=1800, Media-Lab~900. We've previously approved up to $1100 for SIPB to pay. However, we need to talk to Kathy Allen, etc, to get the money approved. jtidwell will continue to deal. Amiga: the Amiga is not being well-maintained; unless we find someone to maintain it, we should try to back out of buying it. amgreene talked to rlcarr, and was less than impressed by his enthusiasm to help maintain the Amiga. leira is willing to talk with rlcarr. web is willing to help maintain, if someone shows him how. qjb, amgreene, and opus "know" about Amigas, however, none of them can really put in the time. The two sidecars are dead; opus took them into System Eyes, but didn't want to have them fixed without approval. tytso urges the officers of the SIPB to keep in touch with Kathy Allen. rls volunteers to call Memory Location to get an estimate on how much it will cost to get it repaired. amgreene will have to deal with convincing Kathy Allen and Jim Bruce that we need the money for this. qjb wants to update Ronald-Ann to current Athena release. A warning as to when the SIPB-cell will go down would be a good thing. Also, it should be done after the backup happens. qjb feels that @sys as a directory name for binaries is a bad thing, since it is system dependent. He suggests bin.@sys. However, the general opinion is that this might not be a good thing. Discussion moved to the sipb-staff mailing list. Ronald-Ann Backup Report: Backup did not happen last week, due to errors. warlord is willing to do it, but he needs bits. He will get bits and he will do the backup tonight. Publications Report: We need editors for the Sixth Edition of the Iness. Guide: mlbarrow and leira agree to edit/work on it. web has compiled a list of what's-where on Athena. He will leave a bleeding copy in the SIPB office. R/O Report: '() IAP Report: A week left to fill out the forms for IAP classes by the 25th; also reserving the rooms. Forms are lying in the office; please let amgreene know when you send one in. TeX: amgreene C/LaTeX: Anand, jik (depending on his IAP schedule) Objective-C: simsong PostScript: web C++: anyone? please tell amgreene if you're willing.... gwm: qjb X-lib: web Other: '() Other Other: Leonard Bernstein died yesterday. MITG&SP's stage Irving is dead. Come help rebuild it on Saturday or any other time. Talk to jtidwell. The meeting was adjourned at 20:44. (phew!) Minutes taken and submitted by jcbourne.
