Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 09/9/91 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by bjaspan. In attendance were Voting members: mhpower bjaspan kkkken len18 klee mjbauer erikkay warlord tytso | wlcarrol Associate members: raeburn dkk srz cjsmith rls jtidwell | jcb Non-voting members: Prospectives: padrelou slippery chars portnoy geoff rei proven ckclark brianuse lbtsirul | jleah rjbarbal jane Guests: Treasurer's Report: He's not here. Chairman's Report: There will be at least four membership elections next week. We need to check on exactly who has been nominated. slippery was nominated at this meeting, and his nomination was approved. There will also be elections to fill vacancies in the office of Secretary of SIPB, and one Executive Committee member-at-large office. (The previous holders of these offices, gamadrid and dkk, are not registered as MIT students this term.) Mail will be sent to the sipb list specifying all members who are eligible for these offices. Office Report: Someone tore down all the posters on the "SIPB Notices" bulletin board. UA notices were found there, which we promptly tore down. We will repeat this if necessary. Our air conditioning is done. MIT Computing Report: 7.3 has landed. set skip_dash. set skip_login. Computer Services: kkkken proposes giving the disk space now used for the NFS sipb locker back to Athena. This locker is not being maintained. The AFS-to-NFS translator is running, so it should be possible for non-AFS sites to access current SIPB software. The SIPB RS/6000 (we're not sure what kind) will arrive here before noon tomorrow. SIPB has no disk space to build anything for the RS/6000. Hodge's monitor is toast. srz will install discuss 1.6 in the SIPB locker. We're not sure where to continue SIPB's development of tcsh. There's a tcsh locker, but it's NFS. There's a beta version of OS/2 in bjaspan's drawer. Barry is interested in porting all of Athena to it. He may have the machine to himself. We don't know where to put the RS/6000. Possibly, something will have to be moved into the machine room. There continue to be people logging in to Athena workstations in the SIPB office who aren't members or prospectives. To find out if a person has been recognized as a prospective, see /afs/sipb/admin/office/members_and_prospectives. You can update this file if you know of other persons actively planning to join SIPB and interested in furthering our goals. If people don't meet these criteria, you are welcome to question why they are logging in here. If anyone thinks they can get the Ultrix 3.1 version of dxpsview running on an Ultrix 4.2 machine (this probably won't be easy), you may want to make a copy of it. But it should be available on the 7.2 system packs for a while. dkk and others are interested in hacking on a one-chip computer, which is available for $68.11. Ronald-Ann Backup Report: warlord will do it. Publications Report: We have lots of publications, thanks to dkk. He points out that they cost us $1 to $2 per copy. Eliminating redundant or unnecessary content may help to cut our costs. The publications can be found online in either /afs/sipb/project/doc or /mit/sipb/doc, depending on the document. There is documentation underneath yaz. The MIT Libraries want two copies of each of our documents. The discuss document needs revision. An "Inessential Guide to the SIPB Locker" might be of interest. There is now some new Athena documentation, including a glossy brochure. The brochure indicates that SIPB's e-mail address is sipb@mit.edu. Maybe we should have a separate address for questions, e.g., sipb-help, which would feed a discuss meeting. Maybe we should encourage questions to be sent via Zephyr (-i sipb) if possible. R/O Report: Clearinghouse is dead. Long live Clearinghouse. But 12 of the workstations in Building 38 are still not available for public use. 75 - 80 people went on the SIPB tours. Only three were freshmen. Should we have tours during IAP? Most freshman are around during IAP. Perhaps the third week? IAP Report: October is IAP planning month. See above. CokeComm Report: We're getting low on soda. There will be a soda run on Wednesday. We have lots of cans, still. Cans should be taken away. Cans should be emptied first. Non-deposit cans should be crushed. Don't leave different typesof plastic attached to each other. Other: Our CD player has a Highland service contact. Highland has a nationwide 800 number. bjaspan has the paperwork. Other Other: '() The meeting was adjourned at 20:20. Minutes taken and submitted by mhpower.
