Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 07/13/92 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by warlord. In attendance were Voting members: tlyu warlord mhpower sidlives (mosquito: asleep) (leira, bjaspan: logged in but not present) Associate members: opus rjbarbal eichin gamadrid rls yandros | proven cjsmith srz Non-voting members: Prospectives: lorianne | jweiss Guests: Treasurer's Report: We spent money this week on 100 copies of Using Discuss. Chairman's Report: The chairman is being paid to be here. :-) He was at a meeting 'til 6. Kathy Allen called us today, because Intel called her to find out what was going on with Quiche-Lorraine. Barr3y knows something about this. So does Chad. Chad says that someone was supposed to get back to him in Feb. Flame to the list. Chad will deal unless someone else volunteers. Office Report: It's here. The office is only slightly pitly. It looked recently cleaned. We had a scanner here for a day, but it didn't do color. It was supposed to. :-) It's not here, anymore. When it arrives, please don't use it without being briefed by Opus. It's his. MIT Computing Report: Nearnet was kinda messed up this week when a gateway crashed. Some sort of software change in the routing caused problems, too. Cyrus migrated. Odysseus will start tomorrow. There is a new dialup machine. e40-008-12. Use it. 7.4G is the "final" version of 7.4. The stud. center cluster is open now. Derek thinks the machines are really cool. Lucy (the ombudscritter [sick[sic]]) is dead. The final draft of AFS at Athena is going out soon. Get your final changes in by the day after tomorrow. If you want to review it, send mail to Sharon Belville (belville@athena). Computer Services: "Do we provide any?" -eichin Move to terminate... SIPB AFS Cell Backup Report: "It was running for a while, but we have problems encountered in reading the dump file." (He shrugs) -mhpower This is the n'th time that we have erased the backup stuff when we update. Umm, let's try not to do this again. When we are sure that its working properly, we should copy /usr/afs/backup into AFS-land, so its recoverable. "It does seem to be proceeding after the error, so we may be all set." -mhpower again. Fire alarms? Did anyone find out about the vault service that Mike mentioned? No, guess not. Just taking them home seems to be a security issue. Just leaving them out is also a security issue. Does the vault cost real or funny money? What is the delay to get stuff back from the vault? Is it worth looking into the vault? "I think it's a good idea, but I think it needs more research." -warlord When the air-conditioners blowup, all we will have left of the sipb cell is those four tapes over there on the desk. Those tapes are mighty close to the exploding machine room. -eichin Move to terminate the secretary~ [sic]. The secretary~ overrides this. Push this discussion to next week pending further research into the vault. "Well, let's see how it's doing. It's gone on to three volumes after the error." -mhpower "1 volumes [sic] of 286 has errors." -AFS backup software Publications Report: We have new Discuss documents. R/O Report: FinBoard sez we don't qualify for funding this year, so we are allegedly responsible for making our own copies and need to give them $60. This seems to be a change of policy by FinBoard. Chee is kinda upset at the [deleted -ed.] FinBoard. Flame, flame, flame. If given no choice, will we pay? Many say that we shouldn't. We only do it 'cause it's free, anyway. Chad followed all the traditions. Ask him for details. Richard is still thinking. Instead of hurting himself, he should send mail to a bunch of people regarding tours. If you can lead a tour (around MIT, preferably), send mail to rjbarbal@athena. IAP Report: September is IAP planning month planning month. CokeComm Report: Please take Coke cans downstairs if you think about it. We have Coke. We have new sheets. Other: The IETF is this week at the Hyatt. There is a cluster there. The cluster is linked via laserlink. Neato keen. (about 30 Maxines) B. Clifford Newman is in town. Apparently there is a pile of birds sitting in between W91 and the Hyatt. (big smiley). :-) They now have better machines at the Hyatt than we have in the SIPB office. We know something that y'all don't know. :-) There is no other Other. Other Other: Right now, people are getting lives. 6 people went to the MFA yesterday. There may even be a trip to the aquarium in the works. Last night's fireworks weren't as good as those on the 4th and 5th. If anyone is desperate for a place to live, Ruth's rabbit hutch is huge. "A Harvey-sized cage." -eichin. CarolYN got a gig. Someone's going to pay her to play music! ping, ping, ping! When is it so we can go? Frisbee Report: There may be frisbee after the meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 20:09. Minutes taken and submitted by gamadrid.
