Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 12/7/92 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by warlord. In attendance were Voting members: mhpower warlord autumn mkgray tytso jik tlyu marthag bert | dcctdw mhbraun Associate members: wesommer amgreene probe cjsmith rjbarbal yandros proven sidlives | bjaspan Non-voting members: Prospectives: ghudson smit gleung sekullbe nsanders midum | svalente yoav Guests: Treasurer's Report: mkgray would like to spend up to $40 on IAP activity expenses. But, he will check with the IAP office first. Chairman's Report: We all introduced ourselves. Office Report: The number of Coke cans in the office is growing faster than ... oh, never mind. The VT100 is a second head for deathtongue. The SIPB office now has a paperclip. MIT Computing Report: '() Computer Services: jik asks what's happening with news. He says that the pit-manager services have to move soon. wesommer says news is stable .... However, marthag says it's not, really: bed doesn't have as much news as poop does. Articles are being dropped somewhere -- about one a week in each group. Bloom-picayune has the articles, too; it's only bed that doesn't. jik suggests that we get four feeds to bed so that the probability of never getting an article is really small. The other people don't want to do this, though. marthag says that, unfortunately, Chad and she haven't been working on news this past week. There cannot be any commitment to a time when bloom-picayune will be freed up, until these problems are understood (the problems with news on the new machines). No one has anything further to say about news. warlord has a message about the machine proposal. jis says there are VS 3100s and RS/6000s in stock, that we might be able to get. Our LaTeX book is gone. amgreene says that the LaTeX book isn't sold in a hardbound form. However, we could get it bound ourselves. It would last much longer this way. svalente will look into this. There's someone recorded as a SIPB prospective a few years ago that might have been elected a member, but we have no record of the election. Mail will be sent out to some of the alumni from the time, to find out if any of them remember this election. SIPB AFS Cell Backup Report: The backup is done. However, the backup of rosebud failed twice with tape errors. The tapes we have probably aren't usable for much longer. We should buy more. Also, last month, eichin suggested that we get some cartridge tapes to back up quiche. It should be possible to back up quiche over the net to hodge. But, nobody knows how to get this to work. bjaspan once spent a lot of time trying to make it work. It is moved to spend up to $130 to buy three cartridge tapes and ten 8 mm tapes. The motion passes many to zero to three. marthag says she abstained because she didn't hear the motion. Also, there were some configuration problems on rosebud. The main issue is that the syspacks cell is now obsolete and rosebud has to get its system packs from the athena cell if we don't want it to lose at some random time in the future. This is done. Publications Report: We have Inessential LaTeX and Inessential Athena. Thanks, Albert! Thanks to Richard for help carrying! dcctdw: was there a motion earlier to terminate warlord? R/O Report: '() IAP Report: kevles, shabby, and mkgray met about the Intermediate Hacking course. They have at least 30 pre-registrations. CokeComm Report: We have Coke, but it won't last long. Other: pit-manager: a picture of jik and the machine will be in a book by a guy that's written other books about Norton Utilities. The current book is for introducing college students to UNIX (TM). (UNIX is a trademark of UNIX Systems Laboratories.) pit-manager is not a trademark of the SIPB, but an explantion of the name pit-manager is supposed to appear in the book. probe: "military intelligence: an oxymoron" This is in reference to a mail message that he received (and warlord has seen). proven is leaving the area, to work for CompuServe in Ohio. He will be hacking 386 BSD into a real operating system. cjsmith hopes to go to Ohio in the fall to a conservatory at Oberlin. warlord has a copy of PGP 2.1. Other Other: amgreene: there's a concert on Sunday, December 13; he's singing with the Zamir Chorale. Zamir's number is 965-6522. See the poster in the office for details. tlyu: there's a lunar eclipse on Wednesday. jik: yesterday was his one-year anniversary with Andrea everyone: Awwwwwwwwwwwwww. wesommer: Let it be known that the SIPB is in "awe". Tomorrow is jik's 23rd birthday. autumn: she is running after the office, maybe going over 100 miles total for the fall term. marthag: being out of the Med Center is much better than being in the Med Center!!! dcctdw: good luck to thsoe with finals! yandros: frisbee anyone? autumn: it's snowing outside. If people want Cathedral 7 shirts, contact mkgray or autumn. The meeting was adjourned at 20:01. Minutes taken and submitted by mhpower.
