Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 02/28/94 The meeting was called to order at 1930 [duh] by sorokin. In attendance were Voting members: shabby bert ghudson sekullbe abbe tlyu yandros xiphmont sorokin mkgray warlord | yoav Associate members: mhpower marc proven bjaspan eichin mjbauer jweiss srz Non-voting members: Prospectives: akatlas bobmacke rei aragorn carib nygren grisha beaners | ark3 cat harrisj vanyel ocschwar Guests: Secretary's Gratuitous Pre-meeting Comment: He's makin' his lists, he's checkin' 'em twice... Treasurer's Report: Reimbursements in the mail for mhpower... warlord: the exabyte drive is dead. We cannot use the tape drive on rosebud for AFS backups. We need a new exabyte drive, the one we have here was the first I/S tape drive on campus. I move to allocate a bundle of money to buy a new drive. yoav: I spoke to sgw, he claims he may be able to repair it. 2) there are also exabytes in existence that store 5 gig on a tape. yandros: Don't allocate money before we know what we're buying. jweiss: I agree with yoav, 5 gig on a tape is important ghudson: Is it worth getting a DAT drive instead of exabyte? warlord: they're cheaper. srz: if we can get two DAT's for the price of one exabyte, we should, definitely... xiphmont: I've run across exabyte drives that are like 4-8 gig drives in the one thousand dollar range marc: is the machine room one a SCSI drive? Could we put it in that enclosure and try putting it on the decstation? sorokin: we may be returning the RS/6k... marc: $1900 for a 5-10G DAT drive. sorokin: take it offline. Someone should come back with numbers before the next meeting. abbe: We should get someone to get the numbers for next week before closing discussion. OFFLINE. Jeff Report [inserted by the chairJess]: They bought Jeff's server proposal thingie for SIPB at the ACMG meeting. He needs the server proposal yesterday. We'll get it to him tonight... So now we have a server budget, and it looks like the treasurer may have a real job... abbe: how come Kathy Allen didn't know about our budget two weeks ago? sorokin: He's going to try to get the accounting sheets for the last few years sent to the treasurer (abbe: wow...) and that they will be sent to her in the future... She'll be responsible for checking up on the money that's spent on our account. abbe: I don't think we ever had this budget. It sounded to me like our funding was coming out of some sort of Jim Bruce discretionary fund thing... But SIPB has had a budget. warlord: We now have this client budget, and this server budget, how about overhead? sorokin: this'll be part of the "Kathy Allen" budget, which will be unaffected. sorokin: Jeff wants to find a way to make us (SIPB officers) signatories, so we can go buy stuff without making prospectives go find this "Kathy Allen" person... ghudson: When will this be "set in stone?" sorokin: When Jeff has a minute, apparently. abbe: Is it ok if I go talk to Jeff? sorokin: I think I want to talk to him a little more, before we get the "random influx of SIPB members." Chairman's Report: Barry introduces himself. Office Report: Office's a pit. bjaspan's cleaning out his drawer. Does anyone know if [foo-book] belongs to SIPB? Take it away, bjaspan. abbe: Beautiful new CRC in the office. shabby: I'll pick up the stamp tomorrow. aragorn: stapler- I've gone to Central Square looking around for a stapler. They're all $5 staplers that are about to break. Surplus army stapler? sorokin: try calling Staples. warlord: six chairs sitting outside the office. want one? take it? MIT Computing Report: warlord: ni is now restricted to nfs2afs service to the Crays. atalanta is still available, but nonsupported. The plan is to limit exports on atalanta to get people to use real AFS where it's available. Response time questions sent to afsreq is now a known problem to them. warlord: I've seen Lotus Notes under DOSEMU for Linux in running in E40... tlyu: Nynex sucks, the frame relay bounced a lot this weekend... warlord: Many chairs are being replaced in the clusters. marc: They bought Lou an uzi. Computer Services: ghudson: Martha sent mail asking for owner-mail-server... eight people replied, she's having a meeting at 9 tonight about it. People who want help maintaining rtfm services and other stuff should show up. warlord: currently we have a single 486... We have over here a decstation with 170M free onto podge and export NFS there. yandros: no, podge will not serve NFS. We're going to get NFS servers in the proposal. Take it offline. mkgray: At the suggestion of jik and others, I'm working on getting GNATS working. It's in /afs/sipb/project/gnats. Anyone who wants to help me out with this: I'm in Junior Lab so it'll go slowly if I don't get help. SIPB AFS Cell Backup Report: warlord: after the meeting I'd like to work with other maintainers to move the tape drive from rosebud? mhpower: It would have been nice to have been told since it's not unreasonable for someone to back up the cell onto ten tapes when it hasn't been backed up in a month... Publications Report: rei: iBitmap - I want to do the hardcopy thing. yandros: how many? rei: 25. White ballot? otay. rei: office manual - no one's sending in any suggestions... bobmacke: I'm interested in doing iPostScript. help? tlyu might. sorokin: it'd be nice if we could get xstapler mentions for publications so we can very easily see how quickly they're going out. mkgray: make a survey on what people think of SIPB? abbe: I think it's a better idea to just put the survey at the end of new documentation. sorokin: I don't think that'll get a very big response. R/O Report: '() IAP Report: '() CokeComm Report: '() Other: warlord: Port of AFS to linux in 6 months, high probability... mhpower: accountability for SIPB services? among possibly other people, I'm opposed to this suggestion. gnats is a good start. Another suggestion might be to allow voice mail for server outage reports. bert: I can attest to how much the CSS office gets listened to (apparently quite little). sorokin: Is it a good idea to get voice mail? It might just get ignored... warlord: I'm personally more likely to read email than to use voicemail. marc: I've never heard anyone in E40 complain about a lack of voice mail for SIPB. srz: How about a more comprehensive list of "what to do" when people call... ghudson: voice mail wouldn't improve my responsiveness. BLAH BLAH BLAH... sorokin: We should make this a serious thing, if we do it. It might work if we keep it an exclusive thing for urgent things. MORE BLAH BLAH BLAH... sorokin: This sounds like a Matt Power voice mailbox is what we are talking about. mhpower: Okay, how about a sipb-urgent discuss meeting on, say, menelaus, instead, so we don't have to worry about slogging through our mail like that? sorokin: Okay, mailing list and discuss meeting. bert: if someone has one of the green resnet posters, I think we want one for the office. yandros: We broke 50 homepages. err, we have more than 50 homepages now. We broke one homepage. Other Other: abbe: Tori Amos tickets on sale... SIPB student-type members can't make it that morning, so can anyone else get it? warlord: Something for making t-shirts (Universi-tees)... generating t-shirts? These aren't letter shirts we're talking about. sorokin: 25th anniversary of SIPB is this summer. This is not other other... but anyway, we should have a party-type thing... potluck? Getting Mary's to cater it? when's Usenix? Send mail to abbe... there are three other people who sent sorokin... marc solved the stupid globe puzzle. oh boy. big deal. bobmacke: ESG's 25th anniversary's coming up soon too. yandros: Usenix is this summer, it's going to be held in the area. Second week in June. The meeting was adjourned at 20:29:30. Minutes taken and submitted by shabby.
