Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 08/22/94 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by sorokin. In attendance were Voting members: yandros shabby abbe rcaileff mwhitson sorokin mkgray cat ghudson tlyu bert | beaners Associate members: jtkohl eichin mhpower jweiss | proven Non-voting members: Prospectives: jsod quijote cordelia jemorris dimon yonah sipb5 | smit jforbess jmmikkel jefreypu Nathan katzchen Guests: Secretary's Gratuitous Pre-Meeting Comment: Yow! Krunking hot wings! Treasurer's Report: abbe: The treasurer is here _again_. This really cool thing happened. I got a form; it was our monthly account statement, and I can see what we spend money on! We have a bunch of PO's that we got the stuff from, and they were all dated 1993, and they're listed as 'pending purchase orders'... lola is listed on this month's account statement, but it may come from last year's or something? Chairman's Report: dcctdw: Nice bandana, Jessie. yandros: Second! Office Report: We got the floppies. They're next to keesh. We got recycling bins. yandros: the signin sheets aren't working. abbe: My 2.70 is finally going away tonight. ghudson: I'd like to ask people not to disable 486 remote access to play games. Please please don't. quijote: The mac's disk drive has been eating floppies. We should make it stop. yandros: Someone should go down to the MCC and complain. They'll probably tell you to take it to PC Service. We may need to pay some for the repairs. Hopefully it's under warranty. shabby will deal. MIT Computing Report: jweiss: big power hit (BIG), Thursday, shortly before 4pm, it lasted close to 10 minutes, it affected most of main campus, about an hour after that, the Zephyr servers all fell over. yandros: The reason there was a power hit Thursday was because almost all ops people were on vacation. jweiss: And everyone who was still around was on their way to a meeting. mkgray: A lot of freshmen were coming in, not in the database, and we were asking someone to add people manually to the database. Hopefully the database was updated already. We're not sure yet. Call accounts if someone can't get an account. yandros: there was an interim release for the Suns sometime last week to make mtools and /dev/audio work... jweiss: There will be a patch release in beta this week sometime; among other things, they fix different zwgc bugs on each platform. Computer Services: jweiss: Some time ago, SIPB had VSII's - some had TK50 drives. The VSII's went away. SIPB mumbled something about possibly needing a TK50 drive? We may be able to get a free SCSI TK50. yandros: I move we allocate $20 for jonathon's free tape drive. jweiss seconds. uhh... it'll be dealt with, no money. ghudson: We have the new athena (Kerberized) telnet working for linux and it's in the kerberos package. mhpower: There's been some work on the new sun server machines - they've got SunOS 4.1.3, discuss on two machines, some security package, other stuff mumbled. Derek built UUCP, Greg's still working on news. bert: If I have time before Rush week starts, I'll compile a new version of TeX for the SIPB locker. SIPB Backup Report: mhpower: Ronald-ann broke today in ways that aren't completely understood yet. The tape drive was in use by a user today (note: he was mostly running matlab, and having his tape in the drive). Publications Report: cordelia: Iness. LaTex is empty... smit: On the topic of iLaTeX, there's going to be a change shortly, so I wouldn't recommend printing too many copies. The xdvi changes will be going in... yandros: The document will be changed before we go to print them for the midway, and we should not print any until it's fixed - the one currently there is WRONG. We're working on changing it, yandros is changing it. Let's approve money to print them after the document is changed. bert: 200 copies? white ballot. ding. abbe: When I find out what the deal with what people should do should do to register for housing. Let's allocate up to 500 copies of a one-page guide to registering for housing. jweiss: I've heard a rumor that there may be documentation in the application. sao (Andy Oakland) would know if this is going to be true. sorokin: Find out and tell abbe. jweiss: Ok, if someone emails me a reminder. abbe: the point was, to describe the process, and how to start the program and stuff. sorokin: Sounds like this might go better on the whiteboard. dcctdw: I'm not sure what this is for 500 copies of. abbe: It's sounding like it might actually be better for the whiteboard. dcctdw: There's no sense in throwing out $200... yandros: I think the document is a fine and wonderful thing; the last time we gave away 500 copies of a document was two years ago... and if we need more we can print them. jweiss: I think 500 is just way too many. sorokin: 150? Seconded. white-ballot? jsod: Just a comment, if it's going to be really small, maybe it would be more reasonable for it to be a zephyr or something? abbe: this is going to include things like "how to get an account"... and, uhh... ok, we're getting 150 copies - white-balloted. cat: Someone came in asking for quick ref on emacs. Where are they? sorokin: Someone should ask for 200 copies. beaners: someone sending mail? mkgray: I am. yandros: Do we need to deal with allocating money for pubs for the midway? no. R/O Report: mkgray: it's coming! First. Thursday night dinners, I don't think Mary's is going to be open. abbe: Grendels in Harvard Square? They have good fondue. cat: It has been brought up that it's not a very SIPBlike place. mkgray: Straw poll. looks like PuPu wins... Meet outside in the oval, yell applesauce... shabby: we need a sign. mkgray: will someone make a sign? abbe: I'll deal with a sign. mkgray: Second. A week from tomorrow is the midway. 5-7. We are going to have three net drops, we're going to bring lola and either deskfish or glacier. We'll bring deskfish. Greg will bring his laptop. We have 200 copies of iAthena allocated, who will deal? sorokin can't deal anymore, workweek. bert will deal. mkgray: Third thing - classes. In 6-120, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday... three classes. We'll figure out what's going on, real soon now. mkgray: Last. Tours? Bean? They've been scheduled for 9/5 at 7pm, and I sent mail to a few people and haven't gotten mail back. The tours will conflict with the SIPB meeting. ghudson: That will really make it difficult to get members to help. beaners: Want to help? Let me know! abbe: There's a freshman named Abbey Cohen (or something like that). IAP Report: '() CokeComm Report: shabby: gamadrid's car was out of commission, there'll be coke tomorrow most likely. Other: dcctdw: daily confusion perl scripts suck, and so does marc. mkgray: talk to me if you want to help break clearinghouse. Neil thinks it works. shabby: jcb said to announce that the IHTFP gallery is out there. http://fishwrap.mit.edu/Hacks/Gallery.html Other Other: jsod: I'm leaving next Tuesday. It sucks. sorokin: It's work week. bert: THe news of my death has not been exaggerated. sorokin: I learned how to use a circular saw today, and I cut a piece of wood like this (moves finger through the air) bert: selected speeches of Clinton are available by ftp from ftp.whitehouse.gov. ghudson: martha asks how many space aliens bert had sex with. sorokin: That question was NOT in the meeting. shabby puts it in the minutes anyway (and Jessie won't know till this is mailed :) mkgray: The whitehouse web server refuses to serve our IP addresses. dcctdw: The MIT Ballroom Dance Team came in second at the US Amateur Ballroom Dance competition at Lowell. The minor detail in this is that there were only two teams. An interesting detail is that the Harvard Team managed to run down the MIT couple during the Quickstep. Everyone Looks at Chad Report: yandros: Everyone seems to be looking at me! yandros: We'll play ultimate. The meeting was adjourned at 20:06:52. Minutes taken and submitted by shabby.
