Office Report: sorokin: Someone cleaned up. jered: I helped clean up the office and you should all worship me now. warlord: I was looking for some books I knew we had and yesterday books were all over the place, and it was really really disheveled. jered: We won't have NeXTstep on the new machine, but we'll have OS/2 and linux. it'll probably be basselope. jhawk: mbone stuff is happening in the office. ark3: explain it to us? many: offline! he'll explain it after the meeting. mhpower: If mbone uses up bandwidth we don't have, what do we do? jhawk: kill mrouted on dt. technical spew comes along. abbe: if anyone happens to discover my keys in the office instead of a dumpster, let me know. yandros: pickled-herring has a new monitor. yay. jhawk: lola's monitor is getting bad. yandros: both of the VRC-16's we acquired are showing signs of loss. We're not sure if the monitor on keesh has a service contract but the one on lola does. Someone should put lola's monitor in the machine room. jered: four weeks for a new monitor for jered's machine. ghudson: my monitor's in for repairs. yandros: we were going to disable SIPB xlogin. I'm working on it. yandros: When the suns were updated /dev/audio got munged... or something. We're currently on screwed up, if you have problems and don't know what to do, ask someone who sounds like they know what they're talking about. cat: Anyone know where the double-sided ducky tape... err, sticky tape is? oh, thanks. yandros: Anyone know what happened with meadow? It got a service call. sorokin: it had a duplex jam, and hotline fixed it? No one seems to know. yandros: the end of the cable for the NEC monitor sucks... be careful. quijote: if you move the monitor cable out of the mac to play games, put it back in the mac when you're done. mhpower: Matt just sent mail saying it looks like the SIPB office will have to shut down 11/5. shabby: last time it happened, we just shut down the RTs and the vaxen and it was just fine. MIT Computing Report: jhawk: The AFS protection server seems to be the root of all evil. They decided to reboot things at 6:57, and they thought things would work in two hours or something. We'll see, and things seem to be okay. Looks like the AFS outage is over. whoo whoo. cordelia: last Thursday ftp service was removed from the dialups for some hours... tlyu: a security hole was found in /bin/login on the dialups and patched. nathanw: yesterday evening the frame relay sucked again. yandros: an old bug in /bin/login was reintroduced on the dialups and fixed again. elliot: apparently print quotas are gone? It was said in minutes for a DCNS meeting... yandros: no, it's just one option... sorokin: there is a possibility that accounting will be turned off permanently. anyone have more info? yandros: no, printer accounting is not turned off. The number of sheets you are printing is, in fact, stored. mhpower: yandros said something about the alpha project in DCNS? would you like to talk about it? yandros: They cancelled trying to use OSF/1 Alphas for servers or clients... sorokin: we should throw out the idea of buying an alpha. Computer Services: sorokin: the web server fell down. yandros: it fell down today because of AFS, but that's different. warlord: I believe after it fell down because of AFS someone took it down gracefully, and it's still off. Someone should deal. sorokin will, but, like... oh, srz is dealing. okay, it's back. yandros: The minutes of the server maintainer meeting are available, if you are interested in reading them, ask jweiss or yandros. marc: apparently there was no posting of alt.* news out of MIT for the last 5 weeks? mhpower: greg set it up and was testing news and set up a news feed from bedfellow to sipb-server-2 and forgot to go from sipb-server-2 to beacon... ghudson: I was just being a flake. SIPB Backup Report: warlord: running an AFS backup. It should be done by 12 or 1. the vault tape needs to come out in the next week. jweiss will do this, apparently. Maybe he'll actually attend the last meeting. shabby backs up. Publications Report: We have everything. iLaTeX disappears really fast, but we don't quite need to get more yet. yandros: any more iLinuxAthena, there seems to be one more left in the box. sorokin: Let's get 30 more. yandros: Does Sal want to update it? motion for allocation of money for 30 copies of iLinuxAthena... white-balloted. R/O Report: '() IAP Report: IAP Planning Month (TM). yandros: some people on linux-dev would like to run a linux seminar this IAP, five days and stuff but we need a volunteer to organize. I can't commit, dkk can't commit. We need to do this by Wednesday. Someone should organize the classes and get rooms and stuff... jtkohl: I'd like to see a similar thing happen for NetBSD, but I can't be here during the day to help out with it. yandros: it'll take half a day of work... abbe: I'll do it... Umm... yandros: I don't know when Usenix is, but we were planning on having the seminars the first week of IAP. Note: Usenix has been discovered to be 1/16-20 yandros: Reg Date for IAP classes is Wednesday. If anyone wants it to happen you have to do it, like, tomorrow. nygren: To get reg forms for classes, send mail to iapreq. talk to mike about everything important. CokeComm Report: We're running low. It will NOT happen in the office. svalente: Rumors that Japan has been renamed TwirlFish are completely unfounded. marc: monty recently sent me patches for zwgc to support kanji. I'll submit them for 7.8. cordelia: I was looking in the Air Force Web pages, and there's a link to the PGP faq and the perl manpages... They downloaded them, for security purposes. warlord: PGP 2.6.2 was released today. I'll be putting it in the pgp locker later today or something. Other Other: shabby: TMBG was really cool. yandros: At the concert, shabby was asked for his autograph by at least three people he never met before.
