How about a decent toolkit? Screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, etc. abbe: How about a power drill? [No.] marc: A soldering iron would be good too. mhpower: I think this is too likely to be stolen to be useful. marc: Keep it in the machine room? Buy a lock? The idea is a good complete toolkit...between $300-$700. I will make an actual proposal sometime in the next several weeks. srz: We could get some, see if they dissapear, and then decide. cat: 1) Send out mail when you have a list of toolkits. 2) Worried about SIPBs 'potential for evil' given tools. rshah: Are we going to see an itemized list? [marc: Yes.] I'd rather it didn't go into the machine room. mhpower: It'd be a good idea to buy one more more tables to replace one or more desks in the office. mwhitson, sgw: [Discussion about lost drawer space.] There are tables to be had around campus. [More discussion regarding tables; personal space, drawers, space in the office. Discussion tabled given no proposals.] cat: Some of our shelves are sorta unhappy; falling apart. sgw: Having recently experienced the couch again...we should consider replacing it. svalente: We should get a nice new Lexmark keyboard for cutter. This would probably cost about $200. Moves to purchase. jhawk seconds. [People think that $200 is too much for a keyboard.] marc: The keyboard should have a non L-shaped enter key. 12-3-6. Motion passes. Chairman's Report: marthag: I would like to address to the prospectives: the SIPB office is not a general social place. At the end of the term when machines are at a premium, prospectives should be doing useful SIPB work while in the SIPB office; even as much as answering the phone and helping users is good. People who come into the office and do entirely private work; this doesn't FTGOS. There's a little more leeway for members, but prospectives should be careful about doing this, especially when there are few free machines. Office Report: abbe: This has come up many times in private mail: As office czar whose sole responsibility seems to be drawers... If you are a recent member and are looking for a drawer, or if you're a member who no longer needs a drawer; it is the member's responsibility to find an unused drawer. So, if you want a drawer, find one. marc: On that note: Linda Julian hasn't been sighted here in a long time. nocturne: tlyu reports he's been lame about checking on a new CD player. gsstark: The SCS lady says they want to vacuum our rugs. Sunday morning 1 am was suggested. This seems fine. Any complaints? [No.] marc: The VT220 that was zsr's console released its magic blue smoke. jhawk: Banana moved to where the fiche reader was, and the fiche reader moved to where the X terminal is. MIT Computing Report: mhbraun (via cordelia): The end of term MOTD is in place, and the 10 minute rule and all other related things are in effect. jhawk: Saturday, MIT routers were upgraded to software that's _only_ a year old. abbe: The Electronic classrooms in buildings 1 and 14 are likely to be open for evenings the next few weeks. Computer Services: mhpower: Mail to usenet-addresses from a publisher who wants to publish a white-pages CD-ROM. Claims to be working with mkgray and Netscape. There have been complaints about this person on news.admin.abuse. We shouldn't work with them. yonah: The web server is acting up due to load. Someone should look at this. SIPB Backup Report: mwhitson: I keep seeing mail about server backups being overdue. If nobody is doing anything about this, I may soon. Publications Report: sit: I plan on copying iLinux tomorrow. daveg: I've been lame, iLatex will be here tomorrow. abbe: iAthena looks old. This would be a good prospective project. (Hint, hint.) R/O Report: cordelia: I am not the R/O sucker. However, I will send mail for them, whoever they end up to be. If you want an early return, it's probably to late, but ask me anyways. We are currently requesting 1 table, 3 chairs, electricity, network. abbe: We requested 2 tables last year. We should do so again. IAP Report: '() CokeComm Report: '() Other: warlord: If anyone knows of any spiffy Windows hackers let me know. (GUI or kernel.) abbe: LaTeX thesis templates make your thesis look really long, really quickly. Other Other: rshah: MIT nearly met disaster as a Hahvard student made it to the 2.70 finals and lost by only 1 ball. cordelia: Lt. Cappuchi sucks. danw: Does anyone have a flashlight? [chorus]: Yes. [duh] jhawk: The WWW5 conference is on the mbone. You can watch it. The meeting was adjourned at 19:53:39. jered: Yahoo! Minutes taken and submitted by jered.
