Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 12/16/96 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by cat. In attendance were Voting members: foley, daveg, emhavens, nygren, fastcart, cat, hartmans, gutnik, kretch, fubob, mkgray, djib, amu Associate members: eichin, tlyu, mycroft, wesommer, ghudson, warlord, mhpower, jweiss | jhawk, proven Non-voting members: Prospectives: jewell, klmitch, jmorzins, jefreypu, rdl Guests: Treasurer's Report: kretch: Nothing for the kretch report this evening. Chairman's Report: cat: He's not here. Office Report: jweiss: The new chairs didn't arrive so the auction will not happen. kretch: The new book cases are arriving Wednesday. What do we want to do with the old bookcase? kretch: Assuming no objections, I'll send mail asking if Mitsfs wants it. mycroft: The fridge was GC'd. People should throw stuff away before it gets four months old. sgw: We have milo sitting up there that hasn't done much in a while. My hope is that a 1G disk will get installed over IAP. I'm going to create a mailing list of people interested in doing things with milo. MIT Computing Report: hartmans: Kerberos V5 1.0 will be released Tuesday, pending no difficulties. tlyu: Building 24 router died last week; this sucked. marthag: The mail hubs are losing again. Computer Services: ghudson: We had a few AFS problems last week. A disk died on reynelda; this was one of our remaining R^2 disks. We're currently running on a spare disk ops will want back. ghudson: It now appears more likely that the consultants will be moving to w20-575A. It is possible that users will walk into consulting more than here. Second, there will not be an IS machine room there. Possibilities for SIPB machines include carving out a chunk of the cluster or to stack machines in the office. I said we didn't really like the second option. jweiss: I was not at the IS forum, but this is all news to me. I *will* be talking to people; this effects ops even more than SIPB. ghudson: The time line here is that student services wants to be operational in the fall. It is suggested that IS would be out of building 11 by April. It's possible that it won't happen at all, although it is fairly likely. ghudson: There was a stipulation that there wouldn't be an interruption of service during the term. marthag: I think there is a really strong preference to keeping our machines near by. Doing that in the office would be a bad idea. jweiss: Ops will strongly resist quick moves. jhawk: I wanted to express my opinion that concerns about power and air conditioning are more important to proximity to the office. I wonder what the state of the printer room is. ghudson: That was all space for the consultants. mhpower: I get the impression that tom is sort of in charge of the machine room transitions at n42. ghudson: It is my impression that he is at least most knowledgeable. marthag: I would like to maintain access and not for example have it as far away as n42. ghudson: sipb-staff is an appropriate list to send comments to. I will try to be a line of communication, but don't put too much weight on me being the person in the middle. SIPB Backup Report: foley: We had another tape die. I'm going to continue trying to get tapes. All of them are done hartmans: AFS is happening. Publications Report: () R/O Report: () IAP Report: kretch: I talked to the IAP office and they will make corrections on the web page and physical materials that come out. They may want us to do the searchable web thing. jhawk: I will use the money allocated for last year's NetBSD class this year since it didn't happen last year. CokeComm Report: jweiss: recycling should happen. Other: jhawk: There are new versions of tcpdump, libpcap, and bpf. Notable features include support for Linux in tcpdump and libpcap, and support for kernel filtering of udp and tcp packets in bpf. mhpower: Supposedly, HTTP set-cookie headers are now illegal in Germany. Other Other: hartmans: It's cool to have a machine that can build your operating system in 97 minutes. emhavens: Kretch, while talking about the shelves, made points A and 2. hartmans: Today, we found out that Michael was not mib even before he was Thomas. foley: 6.003 is over!!! cat: LSC is also going to get a new press on Wednesday. If the press and shelves are exchanged, you will know what happened. The meeting was adjourned at 19:53. Minutes taken and submitted by hartmans.
