Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 06/9/97 The meeting was called to order at 19:30:00 by kretch. In attendance were Voting members: yonah danw amsmith katyking bert nygren kretch amu cordelia gutnik emhavens djib Associate members: mwhitson rshah jweiss mkgray tlyu mhpower ghudson kcr yandros | jhawk Non-voting members: Prospectives: jfmurphy jlwfnord jewell jjnichol Guests: Treasurer's Report: '() Chairman's Report: kretch: We had a Kerberos clue dump. Some people showed up. Office Report: kcr: The office is a dump. It's beyond a pit. There used to be an office czar whose responsibility was cleaning up and being fascist about junk around the bookshelves-- yandros: That wasn't what the officer czar did. kcr: Okay. I haven't talked to Abbe yet, but I am tempted to appoint myself office czar. rjbarbal: The office czar *takes* power. kcr: Okay, I am staging a coup and declaring myself office czar. cordelia [to Abbe on phone]: There's been a hostile takeover. Do you care? [abbe on phone]: I couldn't care less. kretch: Most of the information I wanted from the Sparc architecture manual was available from other sources, so I'm not going to buy it. amu: Has anyone purchased _Maximum RPM_ yet? [No.] Then I move to deallocate the money for it, based on nocturne's comments. (one of which is that it's available for free on the net) [White ballot, passes.] yonah: Someone should deal with the stapler. kretch: I should deal with the stapler. gutnik: Is there a version of _Learning Perl_ for Perl 5? mkgray: I don't believe so. jhawk: I was looking at bobbi-harlow's crashing xlogin problem, and it seems to have to do with which screen the (non-X) console is on. MIT Computing Report: danw: I work for IS now. kcr: I work for IS as of this coming Thursday. danw: Matt Power mentioned something about a new exciting Solaris source license for everyone. Alex says it's a lose and doesn't let you do anything useful and requires you get signatures from everyone who wants to look at source. mhpower: An MIT lawyer talked to me about the license for about half an hour, so people can talk to me about it. tlyu: Do we want to do anything about drafting a letter in protest of WebSIS. rjbarbal: WebSIS sucks, we should do something. nygren: WebSIS sucks, but we should have suggestions for how they could improve things. The biggest problems seem to have to do with Netscape and not how they do things. jhawk: Can we get a straw poll for who has thought about WebSIS and think it sucks, and who has thought about it and thinks it doesn't suck? [Poll is 12.5 to 6] [Discussion moves off-line.] katyking: FTR, I don't think it sucks, but that doesn't mean I don't think there are a lot of things wrong with it. tlyu: From Tom Copetto: We are getting bobo'd on the frame relay, it will be going down for a few minutes. jhawk: E19A and B tried to go yesterday but didn't quite finish, things should be finishing up RSN. ghudson: There will be an Athena patch release for 8.1 late tonight. Computer Services: mkgray: We had a meeting with Suzana Lisanti talking about what we're actually going to do with the web/www thing. The short answer is that the most agreeable short-term thing is to have a unified top-level page but we're going to add some requirements to what has to be there, mainly addressing a lack of student information there. Anyone with specific thoughts should talk to Yonah or me tonight because we're going to discuss it more tomorrow. We're also thinking about what to do with the new machine; people should talk to Yonah or me about ideas. yonah: I'm in the process of installing the software we need. People should point their browsers at sipb-server-1 and then dandelion-patch to test it. mhpower: A user posted a control message exploit through our news server yesterday or today trying to collect passwords, and there have been some complaints. SIPB Backup Report: kretch: AFS is happening now. Anyone know about UFS backups? [No one knows.] Publications Report: jhawk: They look good. R/O Report: kretch: We're set as far as I know. IAP Report: '() CokeComm Report: amsmith: I'd like to take a poll to see if people would be willing to deal with a $.05 price increase or so to get soda delivered regularly. jhawk: In the past we had this done, and it was difficult to coordinate people being in the office for deliveries. And I don't think the price was higher. yandros: When was this done? jhawk: Long, long ago. amsmith: I could set it up so that I would be in the office. rshah: How would this affect selection? amsmith: About the same. mhpower: Would this vendor be willing to pick up recyclables? amsmith: Yes. [Poll is many-zero.] Other: cordelia: Attempting to set up a proprietary operating system without the manuals for it is very difficult. I did it this afternoon. Other Other: mkgray: On Friday a third (that is, eleven) of the voting SIPB members received degrees. They are: jmmikkel, mkgray, nygren, emhavens, rjbarbal, rshah, sorokin, cordelia, danw, yoav, djib. Four of them are remaining students. kcr: Now I can go to Mary's any time I want to. [Applause.] [Someone: except Tuesdays!] jhawk: People are always faster than busses. jweiss: I'm very encouraged by the fact that Karl feels like helping cleaning up the SIPB office, because we're going to be sharing an office. cordelia: Coordinating a trip to Mary's is not sufficient penance for screwing me at sedar. jweiss: Fortune cookies fly a lot better than I thought they would. jweiss: It's a beautiful day; you will come play ultimate. The meeting was adjourned at 19:44. Minutes taken and submitted by ghudson.
