Chairman's Report: '() Office Report: aidan: The NT box likes me now. jweiss: I've been attempting to get filters changed. They came in today and only changed one filter. Two people under another didn't want to be disturbed. Also they didn't want to deal with the fridge. I'm not sure why they thought the fridge was a problem, but people should cooperate when they come to change filters. It takes quite a bit of my time to set up. Office Cleaning Report: sly: I came in last week and found cans and food everywhere. I had to clean up after people. This shouldn't happen. MIT Computing Report: jweiss: Earlier this safternoon, lerts were sent to people being deactivated in January. If people have questions tell them to go to accounts. hartmans: I ended up getting busy last week and didn't have time to deal WRT guest accounts. I should be better now. Computer Services: jhawk: Yesterday was a bad day for www. sly: Webmaster is holding a training session/clue dump. Watch for mail. SIPB Backup Report: jweiss: Quite a few things have not been done. Publications Report: Cluster cards arrived. jweiss: Move to allocate up to $50 to get up to 50 copies of iMatlab. [second white-ballot, cyruse volunteers by accident.] Orientation Report: '() IAP Report: lnemzer: There is no intro to Linux class. I can make mine overlap if necessary. [jmercado volunteers to deals] kcr [as xela]: If you're an IAP class instructor and haven't answered the mail I sent out last week with the subject line "SIPB IAP Class Admin Quesitons --- ANSWER THIS!" please reply to it *now*. The IAP Office *has* extended the deadline for getting information into the printed IAP Guide through this Thursday. But please, I'd really rather not be pushing the deadline. If you're thinking of teaching something, *now* is the time to tell me! Subjects I'd still like to find instructors for include Docbook, texinfo, and 'roff; obscure interesting languages like forth, python, or icon; or how about an introduction to kernel internals? You just have to tell me what you want to teach and answer a few brief questions from me, and let me take care of the administrivia. I even have volunteers lined up to be runners or transparency-turners if you need those! We now have committments for 15 classes, two of which will be offered twice, for a total of 17. Rooms and times are confirmed for all of them, though one or two may still be altered. About half of the classes have been submitted to the IAP office for review prior to inclusion in the IAP Guide. To date, SIPB's IAP 1999 offerings are: Crash Course in C (C^3) (offered twice) belmonte Caffinated Crash Course in C (C^4) khsiao Introduction to Java srz Practical Security Using Crypography gamache Programming in Postscript biomorph Introduction to UNIX Software Development nygren Rapid GUIs Using tcl and the tk Toolkit aidan A Brief Introduction to XML eichin Deep Magic with lex & yacc tb Advanced Internet Topic jhawk Athena: How It Works (offered twice) kretch Customizing GNU Emacs, With a Brief Introduction to Emacs Lisp devnull@gnu.org Introduction to Perl gemery Setting-up Your Personal NetBSD-Athena Workstation on MITnet lnemzer elliot: Is anyone here still thinking about offering a class? nathanw: Maybe a language-related class or one on Pilot development. CokeComm Report: We are out of candy. Other: mhpower: Doesn't appear to be report of questions people have been asked by users. Perhaps we should consider adding such a report. kcr: It seams like that would be slightly silly without a more formal information gathering procedure. marc: Meetings are already too long. jhawk: I think the point is interesting questions. elliot: Things tend to get announced as appropriate. jhawk: We should note that wade died last week in his home. mhpower: ssh 1.2.27 may be released this week. jhawk: Xfree86 is also coming out with a new release. Other Other: '() The meeting was adjourned at 19:56. Minutes taken and submitted by hartmans.
