Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 07/2/2001 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by fyfer. In attendance were Voting members: alex_c sly arolfe ingolia tibbetts nim keithw kolya jmorzins fyfer | golem Associate members: tytso hartmans jhawk jweiss yak yonah zacheiss | marc Non-voting members: Prospectives: kilroi Guests: Treasurer's Report: hartmans: Did we find out anything about DHCP? sly: No. Chairman's Report: Office Report: sly: We installed a new network card in snork and installed the dual floppy drive as well. This required stealing a cable from old CJ. hartmans: We have lots of chairs and more are coming. We should get rid of some. Do we need a motion? jweiss: When we ordered the chairs, we passed a motion allowing me to get rid of the old ones when the new ones arrive. I will have an auction after next week's meeting. sly: We played with the stereo over the weekend. If you look at the back of the receiver, the channel on the left is weaker than the one on the right. Someone should look at it more. jhawk: I matched the mismatched pair of speakers. tibbetts: We're using CAT5 for speaker wire, which is so wrong. jhawk: What we're using there is worse. sly: I move to spend up to $30 for new mousepads. tibbetts: There are 5 over here on the shelf. They're dusty. sly: I withdraw my motion. Office Cleaning Report: tibbetts: The mousepads are dirty. marc: Lick them off. MIT Computing Report: Computer Services: tibbetts: I talked to people at VMWare at Usenix. We are getting GSX server for like no money and will likely have ESX server. These are the enterprise software lines. I'm reinstalling the VMWare machine with athena and will install GSX tonight. ESX is more like vaporware and requires like one VMWare engineer per install. keithw: Can you tell us how the products differ? tibbetts: GSX is like the workstation VMWare but optimized for multiple concurrent vms. ESX is vaporish has a stripped down kernel that it uses; you can't run a real OS on the machine. ESX is sort of like OS/390. keithw: I have a meeting with JIS about the SIPB proposal for roaming 802.11. It's in my home directory if you're interested in reading the proposal. alex_c: I upgraded oed, python, and ruby. yonah: Someone should take over rolodex. Talk to me if you're interested. jhawk: You should send mail to bug-outland. SIPB Backup Report: fyfer: Are backups happening? jweiss: Garry left. hartmans: I've seen them start and successfully finish, according to the zephyrs to class sipb.auto. Publications Report: alex_c: I made more iLaTeX since we ran out. fyfer: We need to move to spend that money. alex_c: $30. [alex_c allocation: $30 for copies] tibbetts: I move for a standing policy to allow people to make copies of documentation. fyfer: I think it would be useful but we often have copies in the back. In the past, people have forgotten to look or made copies of old versions. Having to make the motion prevents mistakes. sly: I agree. Sometimes people are working on new versions. jhawk: I support Richard's motion, though we should in general allocate ahead of time. I don't think that copying while new versions are in preparation is rare and we usually make copies of the old one anyway. fyfer: Vote on standing policy to allocate money to reproduce publications when needed. <9-2-3, passes> sly: In the Treasurer's drawer is the info you need to make copies at Copytech. When you copy, bring the receipt to the Treasurer's drawer. jhawk: I don't understand how you get a receipt when you use the log book. alex_c: I got a copy of the form that they make you fill out. sly: You can ask them for one. Orientation Report: IAP Report: hartmans: Sherri was mumbling about stuff today. fyfer: She was interested in what people think of Jeff Schiller as a speaker. He usually talks during SIPB tours. hartmans: I think he does something similar over IAP. CokeComm Report: tibbetts: He's buying coke. sly: We're failing our inessential refrigerator restocking. fyfer: There's a document on this- you should read it. Other: fyfer: Usenix happened. Other Other: jhawk: There is some other competitor between Jonathon Zittrain and I who is stealing large numbers of two dollar bills from the supply. tibbetts: I move to allocation $20 from the auction fund to find out where jhawk lives. yak: You need to verify whatever he says. jhawk: My understanding is that when bribes fail, it's because you give someone money and don't get the result you want. So it's morally ok for me to take the money and not tell you where I live. tibbetts: I won't give you the money until you tell us. jhawk: I think this is a waste of SIPB's money. keithw: Maybe we should discuss in some other forum what the money should be spent on. tibbetts: No, this is at my discretion. I may take the $20 if I figure it out. keithw: I propose that you can't take the money. It can only go to jhawk or public officials. fyfer: What about informers? tibbetts: I agree to be reasonable. ingolia: I think there are some privacy implications in this motion. jhawk: I waive those objections. It's ok for SIPB to try. yonah: I think this fails the FTGOS test. jhawk: I disagree. I think that entertaining SIPB does FTGOS when we don't go overboard. marc: If tibbetts can't find out with bribes, he sucks. <7-6-5> [tibbetts allocation: $20 for spying on jhawk] hartmans: We just passed a motion in other other. sly: AI is bad. Don't go. I'll take your $10 and tap dance for you instead. golem: Move to allocation $10 for a tap dance. jhawk: FTR, the IMDB does summary reviews. There were good and bad in equal propotrtions. The meeting was adjourned at 19:55. Minutes taken and submitted by arolfe.
