Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 08/20/2001 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by fyfer. In attendance were Voting members: ingolia kolya alex_c golem sly nim arolfe tibbetts fyfer Associate members: jhawk yonah yak belmonte jweiss|cfox Non-voting members: Prospectives: mwp aletta xela cyruse|kareid Guests: Treasurer's Report: sly: I'm not going to be a student soon. fyfer: We'll have elections soon. tibbetts: Move that SIPB pay sly's tuition for one class because she's better than any other treasurer that we're going to find. jhawk: We could just hire her and have her take classes for free. Chairman's Report: fyfer: I'm not sure that I'll be a student in the fall, but it looks like it. jhawk: Where do tours go? What report? fyfer: Orientation. Office Report: fyfer: There are parts of the office that are pit-like. The pile of monitors and the backpacks and the pile of books in the corner. belmonte: My backpack has been on top of those monitors for all of five minutes. I'm sorry if it offends people. tibbetts: I'll finish the bookcase. jweiss: This chair is broken. Has anyone done anything with it? tibbetts: I broke it 10 minutes ago. golem: No, it broke several days ago. I'll deal with it. fyfer: What are those fans? jhawk: I brought them in from the machine room. I'll take them back when the machine room card system is normal, which might be a while. jweiss: If people wanted to make motions to get rid of stuff, do so now. fyfer: Is there a reason to keep the extra monitor? jweiss: I don't know of any reason. cfox: What about the hotline support? jweiss: I'll take care of dealing with them if I get rid of them. cfox: We have as many monitors as head spaces and don't need any more. I move to get rid of both monitors. jweiss: If we're getting rid of the sparc5/70, we might want to do so with a monitor. jhawk: There was talk of using it for various services, like for PO service. cfox: Campus seems awash in 17" monitors so I don't think that anyone who wants a sparc5 will be hindered by the lack of a monitor. golem: Is the sparc in the auction motion? fyfer: No. jhawk: I will take on of the monitors and store it in the machine room if no one objects. jweiss: The machine room is not a closet. fyfer: Neither is the SIPB office. jweiss: It's not our not-a-closet. cfox: I move we vote. <9-2-2, motion passes> Office Cleaning Report: MIT Computing Report: jweiss: 8.4.26 goes out tonight to close some security holes. Computer Services: jhawk: The machine room card system is on the fritz and has been for some weeks. cfox: If it's urgent to get in, you can look for someone in Hardware Services or for looking for ops or network staff members. jhawk: Or anyone with a master key, like the people at CAC. SIPB Backup Report: tibbetts: ha ha ha. Publications Report: fyfer: We have cluster cards and freshmen packet thingies. tibbetts: iAthena is wicked crufty. We're all bad people. fyfer: We should do something about that. aletta: I'm toying with the idea, depending on if I get off my ass in the next week. Orientation Report: fyfer: Emily Marcus is running Computer Tours. She's lined up people from about half of the locations from last year. If you have good ideas of places to go, tell her. The list is in /afs/sipb/admin/text/tours directory. jhawk: Last year, few people came to tours. We need to advertise. We should have an LSC slide. I move to allocate $75 for it. [jhawk allocation: $75 for LSC slide] belmonte: In an office discussion last night, it was observed that it might be useful to move towards punting some or all of the tour component, either this year or next year, and have talks in one location instead. By the time groups get back from trekking to W91 and other places, we've lost a significant number of people. fyfer: You should mention that to Emily. Perhaps we could choose closer computer locations. jhawk: Maybe we should rent a bus. aletta: The Activities Midway is Tuesday the 28. It starts at 6:30. fyfer: Are there ASA rules on what we can do to freshmen? tibbetts: Yes, but we can violate them. No one knows what the rules for us are. jhawk: Don't poster for tours before the Midway. fyfer: Be friendly to the freshmen. xela: Do we have money for tours food? Move to allocate $100 for tours food. [xela allocation: $100 for tours food] IAP Report: xela: The IAP sucker to be has been working on stuff. CokeComm Report: cyruse: I'm back. I will respond to email soon and there will be more coke. Other: Other Other: The meeting was adjourned at 19:46. Minutes taken and submitted by arolfe.
