Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 05/20/2002 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by tibbetts. In attendance were Voting members: tibbetts aletta arolfe nim cana aatharuv | golem Associate members: belmonte jhawk srz marc hartmans dmaze eichin kcr yak ingolia deberg Non-voting members: Prospectives: kenta | kareid Guests: Treasurer's Report: nim: We probably have money, unless I go to Tahiti soon. Chairman's Report: tibbetts: The chairman's laptop seems to have died. The chairman is sad. hartmans: Their are scary pre-frosh doing things that pre-frosh don't usually do, like answering questions on -c help. We should recruit them. Office Report: aletta: There's an iMac. It's going to be mariel-hemingway. It has Adobe software on it, and Glider Pro! tibbetts: I burned a CD on it. It burned nicely. I haven't tried a DVD yet. yak: People keep doing stupid things to their laptops, and asking us to help fix them. I think it would be cool if we got one of those USB->IDE widgets, that's supported under Linux. tibbetts: This one is supported. And it has a broken drive in it and I don't want it. yak: Uh, ok. $20 to mug the chairman and take his thing? tibbetts: Ok, I'll give it to SIPB. [tibbetts allocation: $20 for his little blue widget, if he wants it.] aletta: It would be cool if we could put the old G4 in the rack, but there's no room. But there would be room if we got rid of zsr. Move to get rid of zsr. hartmans: My recommendation, is to send mail to mycroft at all addresses we can find, indicating that a pickup for zsr should be arranged within a month, or it will be wiped and reused. The impression I have gotten is that thor, who theoretically owns the machine, doesn't love it, so that mycroft would be a reasonable person to take care of it. belmonte: Is it doing anything useful? hartmans: It is used for certain NetBSD netbooting, NFS, and it is part of using chomp in the office. kcr: Friendly amendment to make chomp go away with zsr. jhawk: It is being used for chomp, which is being used. I think it would be problematic to just get rid of it. hartmans: I think either chomp should go away, or someone more active in SIPB should come to an agreement about taking care of it. marc: I believe that the services that chomp is using on zsr can be easily replicated on some machine we love more. Also, I have an ARM machine that I have offered to Monty for this, and then he won't even need chomp. hartmans: It would clearly be wrong to reuse chomp, though. aletta: I will accept the friendly amendment, but chomp will be gotten rid of at the discretion of the Office Czar in Charge of Special Operations. hartmans: Marc installed the DVD... thingee, in pickled-herring. I'm currently downloading a Debian DVD to test burning with. Office Cleaning Report: tibbetts: The fish seems to be down. MIT Computing Report: tibbetts: I talked to a user this week who is moving his mail off Athena, because his dorm network connection sucks so bad. I mentioned it to sly. aatharuv: The MIT libraries seem to have a subscription to the Safari O'Reilly books online library. This is really cool. hartmans: More than 10 years later, people still don't know how to write Kerberos initial login applications. We recently found 2 such programs with Zanarotti bugs. Computer Services: hartmans: Last meeting there was talk of making a debian-athena for people to use on their laptops. We're going to work on this. We're looking for volunteers! Check out the debian-athena list and add yourself to it. SIPB Backup Report: hartmans: The backups didn't whine. Publications Report: Orientation Report: hartmans: If people have ideas on how to best recruit new pre-frosh, they should perhaps send them somewhere. IAP Report: CokeComm Report: golem: Got candy. Sucks: marc: CD-R tools trees with lots of symlinks in them. yak: OpenLDAP. jhawk: LDAP! Other: hartmans: A few weeks ago, I said there was going to be a debian release. Last week, I laughed a lot. This week, I'm just moaning. jhawk: I'll be showing "Revolution OS" after this meeting. Other Other: golem: I tried to go on the subway yesterday. BU is having a graduation, and so you get one square foot of space per person. belmonte: BU sucks for having a graduation and fucking up the subway! golem: Yeah! kcr: The weather has been really bizarre recently. It's too cold for the second half of May. hartmans: After an arcane ritual, I was able to summon IBM to Texas, Canada, and finally Cambridge to fix my laptop. This was cooler than sending it to them, but not as cool as it could've been. The meeting was adjourned at 19:49. Minutes taken and submitted by cana.
