Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 01/19/2004 The meeting was called to order at 19:31 by golem. In attendance were Voting members: arolfe golem jmorzins jtu merolish Associate members: jhawk yak | deberg Prospectives: cporter rayhe swhitt wdaher wjh Guests: mimxe Treasurer's Report: arolfe: Angie reminded me that when I came up with how much money we have left to spend, I forgot the Athena service contract fees. It's like $5K of the $10K we have left. Chairman's Report: Office Report: jtu: I'd like to allocate $400 to buy a low table for the back and a larger, spiffier whiteboard. jhawk: Where do you envision this whiteboard going? jtu: The old whiteboard in the back might be moved. The idea is to make the back of the office more conducive for meetings. jhawk: If you have a concrete vision, I'd like to get a better picture of it. jtu: So the idea is that for at least the Ask SIPB meetings and other services, it's useful to have space where there aren't a lot of computers around and there's a place to throw papers around and look people in the eye. We can't replace the couch because it's apparently an unnecessary expenditure. jhawk: That doesn't address where the equipment on the table would go. jtu: The couch would stay. I'm not sure where the stuff on the table would go. The machines could move. cporter: I have a 6'x3' whiteboard if you want. golem: Why don't we look into it offline. I still think we should make the motion, on the principle it's better to do things sooner than later. Also, since people are moving more to a laptop mode of computing, it's more useful to have couch space than heads. jhawk: I'd like to see a more concrete proposal outlining what will be bought and why. <5-1-1, motion passes> [jtu allocation: $400 for low table and whiteboard] jtu: I'd like to move to allocate $100 for two books, Effective Java and Open Source Network Administration. [jtu allocation: $100 for books] yak: I've been trying to figure out a way to set up a nethack server and move it to a SIPB server. There's this current idea I've had involving the Netra on the bottom of the rack. I was wondering if anyone has any idea what it is. golem: That is new-thornhump. I do not believe anyone is currently owning it. yak: I'd like to install nethack on it. jhawk: Is it dedicated? yak: No. Office Cleaning Report: merolish: The office is a pit. Please clean up after yourselves. MIT Computing Report: cporter: Right now MIT is sending email that they're switching from unauthenticated to authenticated SMTP servers running on port 465. I would highly recommend against switching over, because their timeouts are set to five minutes and it actually takes about five minutes, and the certificates are not signed. golem: I/S&T is planning to implode tomorrow. jhawk: Tomorrow 20% of their staff will be laid off. Computer Services: jmorzins: If you have a burning desire to comment on how I'm trying to protect people from running the wrong pine, talk to me. Publications Report: Orientation Report: IAP Report: jtu: SIPB needs a better sucker.
