Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 05/10/2004 The meeting was called to order at 7:30:01 by jtu. In attendance were Voting members: golem jbarnold jmorzins jtu kchen keithw merolish | arolfe Associate members: alex_c Prospectives: aroach hartnett nybor | natan yoz Guests: | baniszew benazeer jamwno laurel msalib riv Treasurer's Report: jtu: He's not here Chairman's Report: jtu: I talked to jdreed about the IS&T student representative issue, and SIPB being an advocacy role and telling I/S what students like or don't like. I'll be meeting with him and othomas sometime after finals are over, so if you're interested in seeing what SIPB can do to help I/S listen to customers, see me. Office Report: jtu: I was sitting there, and I lost all the qwert keys, and I'd like to allocate $700 to buy two kinesis keyboards. golem: I'd like to make a friendly amendment to add $1000 to add foot pedals. merolish: If you're going to ask to allocate $1000, maybe you should do some research. Why do you need to buy more kinesis keyboards? jtu: We're down to 2 kinesis keyboards. One of them broke and we just lost the qwert keys on another one. Someone threw away the boxes, so we can't send them back to be fixed, even though they're under warranty. Last night, Ken said that he would deal. keithw: Can we wait on the motion until the broken keyboards get fixed? jtu: No, I still want two keyboards. keithw: So you want us to have six? jtu: Sure. I've run into the problem of having to leave the office because we ran out of keyboards before. golem: I think everyone should be forced to use Kineses. jmorzins: My only comment is that between 4 and 6 is a good number. Right now we have 2. Getting the two fixed is nice. Getting two more gives us two boxes to ship them back in. wjh: Or we could even offer to buy 2 more if they offer to fix the other two. golem: I can't figure out the difference between a programmable and a non-programmable foot switch. The programmable ones are $130, and the non-programmable ones are $90. I'd like to make a friendly amendment for $850 for two keyboards and a foot pedal. keithw: Would you make this contigent on the kinesis users removing the kinesis keyboards upon completing using them? jtu: Like putting the toilet seat down. alex_c: It's not much of a problem now that we have USB. jtu: I'll consider that hostile. alex_c: If I leave my kinesis plugged into cj, it's not really causing a problem. jhawk: How about the kinesis users ensure a regular keyboard is plugged in when they're done? jmorzins: Can we make the allocation not tied to the motion? jhawk: I think the point was to make the non-kinesis users more likely to vote for the motion. keithw: I propose a friendly amendment that the kinesis users must keep a normal keyboard connected when they're done using a kinesis keyboard. [jtu allocation: $850 for two keyboards and a foot pedal] jtu: It is my firm belief that I was membered because I came into the office and used the kinesis keyboards. alex_c: motion to allocate $100 256 MB of memory for cj. [alex_c allocation: $100 for memory] jbarnold: There's a pile of stuff back there that hasn't been moved in a long time. I'm willing to put in work to make it go away. I want the board to address the pile and what needs to be done to make it disappear. arolfe: I have a pile too. I'd like to get rid of these backup reports from the 80s for services that no longer exist, this pile of random crap that came with the Dell machine, these videos, these 17" monitors, these keyboards, the PCs here, the broken audio device. jhawk: Would you mind leaving the old documentation there for a week so people can look at it? arolfe: I'll give you a week. jtu: I'd like to remove the keyboard trays atop the fridge at my personal discretion. Office Cleaning Report: MIT Computing Report: keithw: sucks jhawk: The network group scheduled several router outages on very short notice, which inconvenienced many people since they took place during evening hours, instead of off-peak time for students. Perhaps someone should complain. Computer Services: jbarnold: scripts.mit.edu is now running a mail script service and a shortjobs service. They process mail and cron jobs respectively. keithw: Two record labels have proposed that we pay them $1 per student per year to be able to use MP3s that they would sell us for LAMP with the caveat that they can't actually sell us MP3s, and we would have to get permission from the artists to use the music. We probably will not be doing this. We're looking into a backup plan by ripping CDs. Publications Report: jtu: They look mostly OK from here. Orientation Report: IAP Report: CokeComm Report: jtu: jenselby says she's making one more run as CokeComm and then she's not going to do it anymore. Other: jtu: I ran into a robot in the infinite. I decided to stand in front of it. I realized that standing in front of a 300 lb. robot designed for a course 6 class was a bad idea. It tried to turn and decided to run over my foot. golem: Two SIPB members, Richard Tibbetts and Aletta Wallace are getting married this weekend. jtu: We're still having this 35th reunion thing. jweiss is going to be doing the steak fry. If you'd like to help in any way, please let me know. I think I've figured how to make a 10-foot banner. The reunion is on June 13. golem: Are you making the banner out of meat? jtu: No. I'm not making the banner out of meat. Other Other: [baniszew, benazeer, jamwno, laurel, msalib, natan, riv, and yoz enter singing the APO toast song to the tune of The Engineer's Drinking Song] The meeting was adjourned at 7:46. Minutes taken and submitted by kchen.
