Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 12/13/2004 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by jtu. In attendance were Voting members: golem jbarnold jmorzins jtu kchen merolish | keithw Associate members: asedeno dbj hartmans int18 jhawk lnemzer xela Prospectives: tabbott Guests: jpevner Treasurer's Report: Chairman's Report: jtu: I just woke up. There's going to be an ISTAB meeting tomorrow. I sent mail. If there's anything you feel ought to be raised, let me know. Office Report: jmorzins: Somehow opus's /dev/cdrom and /mnt/cdrom was deleted. This has been fixed, but is kind of weird. jmorzins: Please load the correct staples into the staplers. Office Cleaning Report: MIT Computing Report: jmorzins: MIT has an agreement with Microsoft that lets undergrads download Microsoft Windows. You can download it twice. You get a license key that is valid for five days. There's currently no way to reset your download counter. Students who find themselves past their download quota can come to N42, and we'll get an OS to them somehow. Grad students are not covered in MIT's campus agreement, but can still get Microsoft products if affiliated with Sloan or EECS. jtu: What happened to getting CDs from Helpdesk? jmorzins: That's discontinued or forbidden. Computer Services: hartmans: I was in Sweden last week. There's this project that basically wants to have a Debian environment targeted at colleges that has AFS, Kerberos, etc. They're looking for people with clue. It might be a good way to work on a relevant software project. If you'd be interested in working on it, contact me. golem: Is this related to CSAIL Debian? hartmans: No. jtu: Someone who asked us for a vmware thing for weblogs is using it for something else. jbarnold: SIPB is explicitly listed as a group that's suggested to contact for sponsoring iCampus projects. jmorzins: If we're looking for ways in which we can have a purpose, supporting student services is a good way to have a purpose. hartmans: I think that if a service becomes sufficiently popular that it is important to maintain it. jhawk: The iCampus evaluation committee asks people to demonstrate support before they get funding. It's hard for SIPB to determine what the resource commitment will be. golem: Our role is not to do anything but to throw symbolic weight behind it. We should evaluate these things on a case-by-case basis. jmorzins: When the person came by, my reaction was gee, I'm not sure if we want to run this for them. After I thought about it longer, my reaction was that I would be happy to make the person a prospective, and then to ask them to run it themself. hartmans: First, SIPB has been in the business of evaluating student projects for longer than anyone in this room has been affiliated with MIT. I agree with Jacob in that if we evaluate a project and it sounds interesting, we should allow people to become a part of SIPB and run it as a SIPB project. golem: I'm going to summarize by saying punt it back to the user. [agrees to deal] golem: Does MIT have a Wiki thing for students? hartmans: It has been talked about. keithw: Sportcast got turned down. Publications Report: jhawk: I noticed comments about iLatex from May and have cleaned it up. People should comment on it. Orientation Report: IAP Report: jtu: We have three speakers lined up. We're a bit sad on publicity so if anyone has time we'd appreciate it. Drop Sherri a line. CokeComm Report: Other: golem: Keith had an important interview today and it went well. jmorzins: I figured out how to get my USB drive working on Solaris. hartmans: I went to this AFS conference in Sweden. jtu: I'm three-quarters of the way through the term. golem: Everyone in my lab went to a conference but me. asedeno: I've applied to grad school. Other Other: The meeting was adjourned at 19:51. Minutes taken and submitted by merolish.
