Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 07/18/2005 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by kchen. In attendance were Voting members: kchen arolfe janetryu jtu Associate members: jhawk deberg jweiss gschmidt asedeno Prospectives: zev cporter tabbott Guests: Treasurer's Report: arolfe: New fiscal year started. We have ~$12k we can spend out of ~$34k. cporter: Do we have to pay more for phones? arolfe: No. Also, in April keithw moved to confine motions to the current fiscal year. This means we don't have any more standing allocations for office expenses, etc. Chairman's Report: Office Report: jtu: It's a fucking strange place. arolfe: There were some ideas for what to do when things move back into the office. One of them is it'd be neat to put some shelves on the left wall, replacing the bulletin boards, creating an enormous amount of space and allowing us to punt the monoliths. jhawk: It might be tough for shorties, and annoying to browse the books. gschmidt: I like the sense of open space right now. arolfe: Move to allocate $200 to get an estimate from facilities. jtu seconds. janet and jtu: As short people, we prefer proposed solution. jtu: We should flip around all the desks to form a steel cage for deathmatches to settle any office rearranging disagreements. asedeno:"Steelcase deathmatches." arolfe: Other ideas we might not want to vote on. One is reduce the number of filing cabinets, because they block the office. Many people using the cabinets aren't around anymore. Another is to punt the bookcase full of CDs. One option might be to give owners a 2 month window to reclaim them, after which we donate them to LAMP. cporter: When does the furniture come back? arolfe: Dunno. Quotes on rug replacement are being gotten. jweiss: Should we consider replacing the carpet at our own expense? jweiss: Some group of people tested all the network drops. (That was deberg and dsheets.) They all work, w/ the exceptions of port 2 on each of w20-557-{02,05,06,07}. We have no reason to believe they should be active, but we can easily activate them if necessary. gschmidt: What control do we have over when our stuff is returned? arolfe: Enormous amounts of it. We can get a key from CAC any time. They have been very helpful. Office Cleaning Report: arolfe: Well... arolfe: This place was filthy. Maybe we should expand the scope of the fish reminder. We tossed lots of stuff in the move to the basement, and we'll probably do it again as things return upstairs. Thanks to woz and many others for the Sunday moving. arolfe: The most significant mold growth was found to be under the fridge. jhawk: We used to empty the fridge pan regularly. What happened? MIT Computing Report: jhawk: The people implementing the jabber project have made noise. zev: What is the point of the jabber project? jhawk: Eventually, but perhaps not soon, a possible replacement of zephyr. Possibly including a gateway. kchen: Subscribe to wocky@mit.edu if you're interested. Computer Services: arolfe: bloom (news transport) has crashed 3 or 4 times in the past week. jweiss and arolfe replaced apparently-faulty CPU module. Publications Report: '() Orientation Report: tabbott: Send mail to yoz or myself about potential computer tour locations. IAP Report: jtu: Sherri is working on speakers. CokeComm Report: deberg: There's no coke. Other: jtu: Shirts are in -- I'll do something once the office is back in order. Other Other: cporter: Flying tigers is a great demo. jtu: I moved to an apartment, but I still need a job. jhawk: mit-talk is back. Subscribe w/ moira or mailman. MIT discussion of all sorts. The meeting was adjourned at 19:46. Minutes taken and submitted by deberg.
