Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 06/5/2006 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by tabbott. To have items appear on this fiscal year, we must order them by June 14th and have them shipped by June 30th. I'll have more precise numbers by the end of the week. I'll make sure we go a little over (and not under) by buying toner. Chairman's Report: tabbott: I have nothing. MIT Computing Report: jhawk: Casetracker has switched over completely to RT. It would be nice if it worked. SIPB Projects Report: tabbott: The new machine arrived. yoz and I have been working on installing it; the network card is supported by Athena but the installer doesn't believe it. We may experiment with Xen Athena on it. kchen: I put ISOs for Ubuntu 6.06, Dapper Drake, into SIPB AFS at /afs/sipb.mit.edu/contrib/ubuntu/. I also ordered 10 free CDs, but I can't order more. (Someone can with another email address.) I ordered 8 PC, 1 64-bit, and 1 Mac. They'll take a while to get here. Office Report: jhawk: The oscilloscope doesn't have any good way to deal with all the probes that came with it. We should get something to help store them. The recommended case from Tektronix is $80. It's like a bag. You need something to keep the probes from getting lost, damaged, ... mathmike: How much do probes cost? jhawk: They're low-end probes. Maybe $50. tabbott: I feel $80 is on the extravagant side. jhawk: Designing Interfaces (the book) showed up. tabbott: I've heard people say SIPB should get a shredder. We could put it somewhere instead of a trash can. If we get one, we should get one that is appropriately industrial. kchen: Last time it came up, keithw argued against it. He had pieced together stuff that had been shredded by The Tech (a straight-cut shredder). jhawk: It should be cross-cut. tabbott: It's a service similar to a stapler, but a bit different. It's hard to find one across campus that is publicly usable. We can postpone discussion to later. jhawk: I have two matched sets of hole punch heads that fit other hole punches. I'm still working on it. wjh: I replaced the milquetoast network cable. jhawk: Someone should look into the new scanner soon. tabbott: Earlier this week aseering set up pickled-herring as a dual head. We put it into the rack, since it was the slowest machine, so we'll probably reproduce it on the new machine. tabbott: The chair fixing people are coming next week? belmonte: They're coming Wednesday. jhawk: CAC is supposed to get ceiling tiles replaced from last summer. They got confused between that and LSC's ceiling tiles from last month. tabbott: We should celebrate the one-year anniversary of the flood. Anyone have the exact date? aerynne: June 27, the day before my birthday. jhawk: The water fountain is still broken. It went from a small trickle to off and back to a small trickle. tabbott: It's a slightly larger trickle. Office Cleaning Report: Publications Report: tabbott: iAFS seems low. aerynne: I got stalled on iAthena. It's on my list. Expect no results soon. tabbott: If anyone else is interested in fixing it up, talk to aerynne. CokeComm Report: aerynne: I'm retroactively declaring Coke to have been in the office now, since it will be in half an hour. I ran dots. If you owe me money, pay --- CokeComm is not supposed to run at a loss. Restock the fucking fridge. jhawk: You can buy soda at Laverde's if CokeComm is out. Orientation Report: tabbott: danjared has agreed to run Computer Tours. I'll make sure he contacts the right people before it's too late. tabbott: The FYSM is going out on June 15. If you're interested in helping with that, let me know. aerynne: In the past few years, SIPB has purchased an ad in How to Get Around MIT, a publication distributed to all incoming freshmen and as many incoming grad students as we can get into the hands of. It's a good way to get word out; a lot of people look at it. It's $500 for a full-page ad. Smaller ads are available. kchen: Motion to allocate $500 for a full-page ad in HTGAMIT from next year's budget. aerynne: There's a deadline at the end of June/beginning of July. jhawk: Given choices of advertising, we should decide what's effective. There are LSC slides, the Infinite projectors, HTGAMIT, the Tech, postering, and probably others too. aerynne: The East Side Calendar. jhawk: And the little things the Card Office gives new students. We should pick what things to pursue and not spend willy-nilly. Maybe we think HTGAMIT is a good organization and should get our money. We should make that comparison. wjh: I presume there's an entry for SIPB by default. aerynne: Yes. In fact, SIPB appears in a couple of places. I don't know how much LSC slides run, but the advertising in HTGAMIT is about half the advertising of the Tech. jhawk: That's not a fair way to look at it. tabbott: We should give this some more thought. kchen withdraws the motion. Other: asedeno: I submitted a patch to Kerberos to fix incompatibilities between the 32 and 64-bit krb4 libraries. It was accepted by hartmans. aerynne: I'm selling a bed. Does anyone want one? jhawk: Cambridge and the US are having a major rise in bedbugs, so don't pick up beds and couches you find on the street: they almost certainly have bedbugs. tabbott: kchen, mathmike, and I started work at Akamai today.
