Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 12/18/2006 The meeting was called to order at 19:30:01 by jbarnold. In attendance were Voting members: jbarnold tabbott nelhage presbrey jhawk kchen Associate members: asedeno mitchb jemorris Prospectives: quentin mathmike tilia geofft Guests: Treasurer's Report: jhawk: Keith should have his money, if he's picked it up. There was confusion about what he was allowed to spend the FinBoard money on. A consequence was that he spent less money than he otherwise would have. Sportcast got $2,240 or so. $948 were spent, $200 from a line-item for a $400 expense. They didn't spend about $1,000 they would have otherwise spent. jbarnold: Our ability to request FinBoard money in the future has probably been decreased as a result of this snafu. jemorris: Any such effects probably only last a few terms. jhawk: SIPB has the second highest funding of any student group. jhawk: SIPB's FinBoard account was instantiated as "SIPB Fund", which caused jhawk some confusion and should probably be changed. Chairman's Report: jbarnold: I don't have anything. MIT Computing Report: mathmike: There is a scheduled Moira outage this Saturday to upgrade to version 6. SIPB Projects Report: geofft: SIPB should try to acquire an OLPC. tilia: I can ask, but I think it will be hard. It's green and it has cute little ears. jhawk: What would we do with it? geofft: Hack on it and make cool stuff, which is what we do with any computer. jbarnold: I used their wireless card driver for my project, so I'm intimately familiar with its wireless card driver. Office Report: nelhage: We should get more random optical mice for members' use with laptops, especially since we have all this table space. jbarnold: What table space? nelhage: I move to allocate $50 to buy optical mice for the office. kchen: Seconded. tabbott: We should increase your allocation. Five mice seems reasonable. nelhage: I move to allocate $100 to buy optical mice for the office. kchen: Seconded. I will note that I'm not fond of the current optical mice we have. nelhage: $200! [$100 for optical mice: white balloted] jhawk: What happened to the other twelve orange cones? geofft: Can I suggest that we move the VM to the front of the office and put the xcluster display on a second head on the VM? jhawk: I don't think that IP addresses will cost us after FY08, so don't worry about it. jbarnold: So you think it's the case that an MIT initiative will actually happen on time? jhawk: Also, our VM machine is unreliable. tabbott: Apparently, we've also had reports that the VM machine's hard drive was broken today. tabbott: Someone should get around to mounting the other speaker. jbarnold: mycroft talked about it, and he said that it would involve drilling into the speaker and thus ruining its acoustics. *mumble mumble* jbarnold: There was an assassination attempt in the office on Saturday. rayhe was sitting down and the chair fell off the base. A piece sheared off, and a bolt was missing. jemorris: I swear it was aimed at jhawk. jhawk: Yes, it's covered under the warranty. Do we want to file a lawsuit? jbarnold: MIT has good lawyers. jbarnold: We should check the chair's black box to find out what happened. tabbott: I find that there's a shortage of chairs without armrests. Does anyone object if we remove some? jhawk: I object. quentin: Can I object? jhawk: Yes. jhawk polls the room: 6 people like armrests, 6 people don't. tabbott: We should probably remove one set of armrests. jbarnold: Manila folders, whiteboard cleaning fluid - jhawk. Office Cleaning Report: tilia: There's a huge mess on the center table. jemorris: Just after the meeting, we'll be removing all the papers on the center table. tabbott: There's a bunch of computers in the back of the room we should probably get rid of. jhawk: I think we should maintain Max in a less prominent location. tabbott: Does anyone know why there's an LCD on the floor in the back? asedeno: In preparation for the next flood. Publications Report: '() CokeComm Report: '() Orientation Report: IAP Report: tilia: IAP is still sooner than you think. Talk to me tomorrow if you're interested in teaching a course. tbabbott: What do we want to do during IAP? Hackathons, etc.? geofft: I suggest a multiple-day hackathon where we rebuild... mitchb: Every chair. nelhage: Why don't we have a consecutive 48-hour hackathon? jemorris: We should get a futon for people to crash on during the hackathon. jbarnold: geofft, by executive order, you will finish your sentence! geofft: Let's build a system that is equivalent to Athena but replacing everything we don't like. We'll build our own network file system! jemorris: We'll replace C because C sucks! nelhage: We can run it on jbarnold's cell phone! jbarnold: This IAP, there will be the SIPB Defcon sign project. jemorris: I preemptively suggest that the Defcon number not lower for SIPB service failures. jbarnold: Apparently there is the Emergcon for greater-than-Defcon emergencies. Emergcon 1 is "ICBM attack against the US", Emergcon 2 is "giant ICBM attack against the US" jbarnold: Everyone should look forward to assembling the Athena Defcon sign. mitchb: If an ICBM attack happens in the forest and no one is around to see it, did it happen? Yes! Other: tabbott: jbarnold made this cellphone thing have wireless working in linux. nelhage: jbarnold and wdaher earned P's in their UROPs. jbarnold is giving a presentation tomorrow. jbarnold: I don't think I can invite everyone. jhawk: We only have 5 Ethernet cables. Mitch, get us more. tabbott: I've defeated all of my graduate student suffering. andersk (offstage): Is anything useful happening? kevinr (offstage): It's a SIPB meeting. jbarnold: rayhe was suggesting we remove the ceiling tiles because it goes up another 3 feet. jemorris: We have big steel members, but no steel prospectives. (jhawk removes a ceiling tile.) jhawk: When is tilia's membership meeting? jbarnold: January 8th. Other Other: nelhage: wdaher says it's Trivia Night at the Thirsty Ear. mitchb: Where is the meeting next week? jhawk: I will do it if people want me to. mitchb: I'll run the meeting in 3-133, or outside if occupied, at 7:30 PM. jbarnold: January 1 meeting in W20-557 at 7:30 PM. If W20 is closed, 3-133, or outside. The meeting was adjourned at 20:07:35. Minutes taken and submitted by quentin.
