Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2007-09-24


The meeting was called to order at 19:31:32 by jhawk.

	jhawk: They seem not to be here.

MIT Computing Report:
	jwalden: Tuesday morning some of the AFS servers went down
		briefly.
	ternus: There was a scheduled outage on Wednesday night in
		response to the Tuesday outage.

SIPB Projects Report:
	ternus: I’ve been investigating Debathena stickers, and the
		quantity we can get is ~500 stickers.  I’m not sure
		how we’d use that many stickers.
	ternus: I move to allocate up to $150 for Debathena and other
		stickers.

	kaduk: I’ve been bothering people about remote functionality
		to determine whether the SIPB office is open/closed; a
		reed switch sounds like the right away, but I haven’t
		investigated further.  Does SIPB happen to have a reed
		switch?
	jhawk: No, Radio Shack would have one.
	<various discussion of privacy issues related to determining office
	 openness, but nobody actually articulates a concern about privacy>
	kaduk: Allocate $50 for parts for this project.

	quentin: We’ve noticed a remote syslog server would be useful
		for monitoring services.  We’d like to purchase two
		IBM hard drives, but they’re pretty expensive through
		GovConnect.  Does anyone have suggestions for where we
		could get them more cheaply?
	quentin: I’d like to allocate up to $900 for two IBM x335 hard
		drives for a Nagios server.

Office Report:
	ternus: Both of the new keyboards ordered last week have
		arrived.
	belmonte: I plugged quiche into the KVM, except for its mouse
		because I couldn’t find a cable.
	jhawk: The paper cutter is missing two of its four feet.

Education Report:
	dvp: I’m coordinating IAP classes; there should be further
		mail soon.
	dvp: IAP is sooner than you think.

	jhawk: We seem to be out of iLaTeX.
	jhawk: I move to allocate $50 to get new copies of iLaTeX.

Other:
	ecprice: The Harvard Computing Society is having a barbecue
		this Saturday at 13:00 in Quincy Courtyard; SIPB
		members should come.

Other Other:
	belmonte: In a bizarre twist, I am now simultaneously a
		faculty member at Cornell, a staff member at the Broad
		Institute, and—after twenty-one years of on-and-off
		trying—temporarily a student at MIT.
	ecprice: I’d like to do a private showing of the Morris worm
		video; is there anything in particular I need to do to
		borrow it?
	jhawk: I think we can just let ecprice borrow it.
