Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2007-10-15 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by tabbott. In attendance were Voting members: andersk aseering belmonte jbarnold mathmike tabbott tilia Associate members: asedeno ocschwar Prospectives: jesstess price tvald | dvp Guests: Officer Reports: MIT Computing Report: aseering: There was an AFS server that went down yesterday. tabbott: It was sad. price: There were two AFS outages on different servers, polyphemus and I don't remember the other one, 'cause it’s not my server [phlegethon]. SIPB Projects Report: andersk: scripts has announced the “One Vhost Per Child” program, and now serves lockername.scripts.mit.edu. ocschwar: Is there any interest in making scripts work with WebDAV? andersk: This is difficult for security reasons. jbarnold: You can run your own Apache. Office Report: tabbott: We finally succeeded in defeating the table issue. The new table is now in the back of the office, facing sideways. It currently has some LCDs, keyboards, and monitors so you can attach your laptop to it. We seem to be out of USB keyboards; we should get more. jhawk: Facilities replaced our thermostat. There were issues. If you notice that the office is too cold, let me know. Our temperature measurement devices suggest that the temperature is 68, which I think is too cold for the office. Several lightbulbs were replaced. jhawk: People should remember that the recycling bin is not for banana peels. tabbott: The black bag is misleading. tabbott: binkley is de-deployed, and at the bottom of the bookshelf. tabbott: There’s this old Mac laptop that seems to have appeared; anyone know what it’s doing here? jhawk: I believe it was under the extra table. belmonte: It looks like part of the SIPB computing museum. price: It’s a Powerbook 520c. It does not appear to come with a power adapter. jbarnold: There’s a property tag on the bottom. tabbott: We found the old oliver on the floor, and put it in the monolith. tabbott: We found a pile of things which we suspect nobody wants, including these copies of Technique, FORTRAN manuals, and some members’ theses. belmonte: I’d like to raise the issue of the archiving of members’ theses. jhawk: I’d like to encourage the board to embrace and expand the idea of keeping members’ theses. price: I don’t think the MIT library gets rid of them. price: If we want to collect members’s theses now, we should do it electronically. tabbott: What about these copies of Technique? jesstess: I’ll take them if nobody wants them. tabbott: Does SIPB need these theses in the office? The consensus seems to be no. tabbott: There’s this CRT, which used to be the second head for deathtongue. Anyone think we need it? tabbott: It doesn’t seem to have any MIT property tags on it. We’ll post it to reuse. tabbott: Did anybody look up USB keyboards? Move to allocate $50 for two USB keyboards. tabbott: Another item of business is the screen for the projector. If we were to buy a 96ʹ×72ʹ screen, we would happily be able to project things. If someone wants to volunteer to do the mounting work, we could buy one for about $200. jhawk: I’m told that there was a meeting between the SIPB leadership and IS&T regarding the building rewiring. tabbott: They said they might be able to get some drops added or removed in the SIPB office and they would contact us at some point. jbarnold: I’m not sure that’s clear. They seemed to indicate that the time scale was fairly short; they might poke us again, but if there’s not further communication between us and them, we’d get the same number of drops in the same places. tabbott: We should think about how many drops we want, and where. I’d be happy to forward a plan on to them. jhawk: I think the issue is more how they’re going to get mounted, and the density of drops. I assume we just want to double the number of drops in approximately equal density. belmonte: Are drops always straight out of the wall? Can we put drops in the ceiling or laptopland? price: It sounds like someone needs to talk with them. jbarnold: I said something about increasing the number of drops by 20%–40%. They said that increasing the quantity is probably easy. belmonte: This is not productive; someone should volunteer to be dropmaster or dropmistress and take charge of this. jhawk: [question about SIPB’s role regarding the rewiring] jbarnold: SIPB now has information about what’s going on in the machine room and the cluster, and we’ve been asked to convey that information to students. tabbott: Yoyo was going to put up some posters on the cluster door giving details about the construction. mathmike: Does this mean we’re going to have more bandwidth? tabbott: In theory, it will be a gigabit network. jhawk: jbarnold, would you be willing to ask for clarifications regarding this? jbarnold: I would rather not. I would hope that current officers would be willing to take on this task. tabbott: So being an EC member doesn’t count? aseering: snork and bobbi-harlow are back. Education Report: dvp: You should all teach a SIPB IAP class. Go to stuff.mit.edu/iap. Send mail to sipb-iap. I expect mail from all of you. price: No cluedump tonight. Nelson will give a cluedump on exploit techniques, on November 5. tabbott: I think there was progress on iZephyr, and a new Ask SIPB column. Other: tabbott: price and I will be out of town next weekend. Other Other: '() Discussion Report: The meeting was adjourned at . Minutes taken and submitted by andersk.
