Is there interest in ordering Creative Suite CS3? broder: Bill Cattey approached me and the list about doing MacAthena development as an IS&T project for hire. I think we’re still talking amongst ourselves about whether we want to do this. I think I will gladly accept input from IS&T but I’d rather have this not be a paid project. tabbott: It seems weird that they didn’t want to allocate any staff time to this. price: There was someone who emailed sipb@ about a week and a half ago asking if they can use iMatlab. I think it’s a failure that this wasn’t already clear. I propose that SIPB make a policy that all its documentation have an explicit Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike license. jhawk: I think in principle this is good. In keeping with the idea that we should make the least strong policy that meets our needs, this should be a recommendation and not a formal policy. price: I think it’s important that it be a free license. If they have an issue, they can bring it before the board. The non-commercial provision is bad. geofft: Why don’t we add CC-BY-SA to everything that currently says ©SIPB, dual license with GFDL? price: I’ll take dual license with GFDL as a friendly amendment. jbarnold: I’m fine with relicensing existing documentation, but I don’t think we should have this as a requirement. People shouldn’t be stopped from doing work for SIPB. price: I think for the most part, people aren’t thinking about licenses, and they’re assuming everyone can use it. It should be clear that people are expected to make explicit that it’s freely available. kaduk: [agree with jbarnold] [wanking about wording] jbarnold: I think the real answer is to say that it’s okay to update existing documentation, and if someone in the future produces documentation with an unclear license, it’s up to someone in the future to correct that. jbarnold: What if I put “Jeff Arnold, Student Information Processing Board” as an affiliation rather than a copyright assignment? jhawk: Move to redesignate all existing SIPB documentation that’s ©SIPB to be dual licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike license and the GFDL. price: I would only add that it doesn’t actually need to say ©SIPB; I think “existing SIPB documentation” is clear enough. tabbott: Is the Debathena webpage SIPB documentation? price: I'd say so. tabbott: Is SIPB going to compel me to change its license? jhawk: How about if we add “barring the objection of the individual maintainers”. I accept price’s amendment and this one as friendly. mitchb: I move that SIPB file for a patent for the process by which it is reassigning the license for its documentation? jbarnold: I would add that it’s reasonable for you to add this to lots of places next week, but if you don’t add it, people shouldn’t assume that it’s covered. We should set a time bound. jhawk: I add that “this process is to be complete by June 30, 2008.” <10-1-2, motion passes> jhawk: Move that it be the standing policy of the SIPB that we recommend the default license for SIPB documentation be the dual license of the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike license and the GFDL. jwalden: I don’t see a reason why we can’t just say MIT license, but I don’t care. quentin: The GNU GFDL is not always a free license.
