Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2008-03-31


The meeting was called to order at 19:30:15 by price.

SIPB Projects Report:

	price: We did lots of work on sipb-xen last weekend.  People got
		about 200 e-mails in their inboxes.  You can now forward
		serial consoles and access them via ssh.  We worked on
		booting paravirtualized guests; it's not exposed in the
		web interface, but will be soon.  We have a fast
		autoinstaller; it takes a minute or two to get a running
		Etch system after requesting it on the webpage.
	quentin: Several VMs died today because black-mesa ran out of
		memory.
	broder: My VM died for reasons we don't quite understand yet.

	mitchb: reynelda underwent a full reinstall at the hackathon, and
		is now running essentially the current configuration that
		ops uses in the athena cell.  It seems to be working well,
		and should be usable again.
	quentin: You can e-mail sipb-afsreq if you'd like to be moved
		onto reynelda to help test.

	tabbott: Debathena set up a new automounter with afuse.  It seems
		to have fewer problems than autofs, so we may transition
		to it.
	quentin: Does your automounter implementation properly handle
		priorities in a locker's location?
	tabbott: No.
	tabbott: There will be a Debian packaging workshop on Saturday,
		and then a hackathon on Sunday.

	nelhage: barnowl hit revision 1000!  It was a very boring commit.

Office Report:

	quentin: We found this Saturday, as in the past, that lots of people
		come to hackathons and $75 doesn't actually cover the cost
		of food for everyone there.  I move to increase the
		allocation for hackathon food from $75 to $150.
	tabbott: The original intent was to subsidize, not cover all costs.
	jwalden: How much over the allocation has it been costing?
	quentin: It was about $25 this week.  We seem to buy snacks for $25
		and then discover that we can't cover dinner.
	mitchb: I agree with this motion.  It seems that the food provided
		at hackathons isn't being abused, so why nickel-and-dime
		people doing good work on SIPB projects when it's such a
		small amount of money for the group?
	kaduk: The motion is to double the allocation... why?
	price: I think the intent is to be able to cover the costs, not to
		actually double what's being spent.
	quentin: Right.
	broder: White ballot?
	nelhage: I object to a white ballot.

	quentin: I'd like to buy "MacOS 10 Internals" for $75.

	quentin: I think that the office doesn't have enough power adapters.
		I move to allocate $80 to purchase a third 85W mag-safe Mac
		power adapter.
	jhawk: Unless we get a whole lot, people will just never bring
		or take out their own, and then we'll never have enough.
	jesstess: I agree with jhawk.
	jwalden: I'm in the camp that brings their own adapter and don't pull
		it out because there are available ones on the table.
	price: Any seconds?
	jhawk: I suggest that next time you think they're all in use, you
		should ask if anyone has one, as info you might want to
		collect.
	quentin: Do you suggest that I actually take and use someone else's
		if they have it, or just take statistics?
	mitchb: You can post the results next to the stapler experiment!

	tabbott: Can we declare the upcoming Debathena workshop a Cluedump
		to have the $50 allocation?
	price: White ballot?

	kaduk: Cokecomm has been running low, and I've been in contact with
		dnawi.  With his permission, I made an emergency purchase of
		a 12-pack of Coke, which is now also out.  dnawi says he'll
		be back early next week and will restock then.

Other:

	quentin: Spring break happened.

	jhawk: The new building network is almost live, or is live but we
		haven't been transitioned yet.  If the drops have a green
		tab, they've supposedly been tested.
	mitchb: They have been; I was here during it.
	quentin: I've tested the new network and found that we get about
		100Mbit down, and 10Mbit up.
	jhawk: mitchb reports that they intend to transition the building
		to VoIP, meaning that we would lose our analog lines.  I'm
		uncomfortable with this.
	quentin: I agree.
	jhawk: I don't think there's any disagreement that I'm uncomfortable.
	mitchb: I think secretly you've been wanting this for years.
	jhawk: ["See figure 1"]  That's all I'm willing to say at this time.

	quentin: CPW is sooner than you think.

	nelhage: I move to allocate $150 to cover drinks at the midway and
		snacks and dinner at the block party.

	nelhage: The Midway is Saturday [April 12] from 1-3pm, and the
		Block Party is Friday [April 11] at 7pm.
