Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2008-04-14 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by price. In attendance were Voting members: tabbott, mitchb, quentin, kaduk, price, nelhage, broder, jesstess, jwalden, mathmike, k_lai | yoz, golem, quentin Associate members: asedeno, kchen | marc Prospectives: Guests: Officer Reports: price: We had CPW, and a prefrosh event. nelhage: The inode and fsck block party was on Friday. There were lots of prefrosh; we told them about SIPB, etc. We gave machine room tours. We talked with them. It went well. price: There were at least 2 dozen prefrosh. nelhage: On Saturday, we had the midway. kaduk and I were there the whole time; njess and jesstess were there for a little while. We now have a couple pages of contact info. jhawk: Are there any treasury updates? kaduk: I am in possession of no more useful information since last week. SIPB Projects Report: quentin: After a 2 week wait, jis issued us a new cert for scripts, about 12 hours after it expired. jhawk: Did you try calling network? quentin: Not until the day of expiration. price: sipb-xen is planning to ask to buy new hardware. To that end, we have a demo for Wilson scheduled for Thursday. mitchb: We finally think we have all the kinks worked out of nmh, so you should be able to begin using it on Debathena later tonight. broder: asedeno and I are working on a repository for commonly wanted packages for maemo, which is the Nokia tablet platform. This should have everything you'd want on a real Debian machine. It'll be interesting because ternus, ccpost, and I are taking this on also as an RCC project. jesstess: We're having a barbecue with our homies from Harvard this weekend. You should come; the exact time and location will be sent out by e-mail by tomorrow. jhawk: Which day? jesstess: Saturday. quentin: LAMP is currently in the process of getting itself working again. We're about 20% of the way done with ripping CDs again. Maybe by the end of the week, we'll be done. price: Is it running with music that's finished already? quentin: No. We might do that later. jhawk: Did you have to restart it? quentin: There were a couple of issues, but we haven't had to start over from the beginning at all. price: In an effort to debug zsr's perpetual display troubles, tabbott has swapped zsr's and cj's monitors. mitchb: Oh, that's interesting. When I walked in a little while ago, I noticed that the monitor on cj was behaving strangely, displaying a jittery line. I didn't realize it wasn't the usual monitor, and powercycled it. asedeno: Is this the blue line? mitchb: Yes. mitchb: Recently, we noticed that our linux AFS servers are logging interesting ATA error messages. It was also noticed that scripts is logging the same sorts of messages on their Western Digital drives. We don't fully understand them, but don't think they're causing data corruption. quentin, arolfe, and I are working on more fully understanding what the messages are telling us and whether we should do anything. quentin: scripts has actually been aware of the messages for a while, but hasn't known what to do about them. Office Report: jhawk: The heating unit by the fridge has its controls reversed. By a vote of the people around, we have decided not to move the fridge to allow them to fix it, and instead have opted to have it relabeled. It seems to have been relabeled in the most confusing way possible. Other: jhawk: I finally talked to the mechanic who decided not to replace the pump after the leak [in the machine room], but I didn't find his justification for not replacing it convincing. I think I'm going to let the issue go, though, because the water alarm should mitigate a future problem. Other Other: quentin: The Chairman of the MIT Corporation will be at the UA tonight. jhawk: This is in W20-400 at 8pm. mathmike: There is a 99.7% chance of California getting a 6.7 quake in the next 30 years, says an Associated Press article describing what "scientists" have said. quentin: MIT's News Office [apparently] violated the law this week when they printed a dollar bill at too close to real size in color. The meeting was adjourned at 19:44. Minutes taken and submitted by mitchb.
