Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2008-06-09


The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by price.

In attendance were

Officer Reports:

	price: It's nearly the end of the fiscal year.  How are we doing
		financially?
	kaduk: Well, we're over our budget.
	price: How does what we spent compare with what we said we'd spend?
	kaduk: I don't have the exact numbers in front of me, but I believe
		it's quite comparable.

SIPB Projects Report:

	quentin: scripts recently looked at its user count and determined
		that we're growing at an exponential rate; graphs are in
		my Public.
	price: It's even the same exponential rate as we've been growing at for
		the past couple of years.
	quentin: We currently have 1,700 active users.

	price: XVM is hopefully going to get some hardware from ISDA soon.

Office Report:

	kchen: The CRT on opus seems to be dying.  The black on the login
		screen isn't black, there are lines across the screen, etc.
	quentin: I move that we punt opus's CRT along with opus.
	price: For background, opus has been deactivated.
	price: Anyone want to keep the CRT?
	kaduk: How much investigation [into what's wrong] have we done?
	kchen: Not much, but it looks similar to other CRT failures.
	price: Okay, we'll give other people time to look like it.

	jhawk: The analog line failed sometime on or before Wednesday evening.
		According to IS&T it was transitioned to the new infrastructure
		later on Thursday.  It's not clear why it failed, but is
		probably related to other work in the building.  It's now
		eating one of the data drops next to the rack, but it is not
		actually using the data infrastructure, just copper.

	jhawk: multics was transitioned this morning to one of those ports
		as well, so we're now down two more ports.
	quentin: Is there a reason we can't put it on a W20 port in the machine
		room?
	jhawk: Probably not, but I didn't see one and this was fastest at
		the time.

	price: cutter-john just spun up for takeoff and then spun down.  It
		reliably does that if you load it.  We're not sure what's
		wrong exactly.
	kchen: I thought it was a vacuum outside.
	price: It didn't do this as much before last month.

	mitchb: After a bunch of testing, we've found a configuration
		for the phones that we think will make people pretty happy
		and restore much of what people have missed.  It's not
		done being implemented yet, but hopefully will be this week.
	price: I've appointed mitchb the Phone Czar.
	mitchb: Note that this does *not* mean I'm the Office Czar.
	quentin: After experimenting last week with the phones, we found
		several failures with them, the most concerning of which was
		when they all read "Service unavailable" at the same time
		for quite a while and could not make or receive calls.
	mitchb: During testing of the new configuration, I unexpectedly took
		a call from a user on the 12th instance of our line, and
		answered the phone "Hello, SIPB Line 12."  (I had expected
		it to be kaduk.)  The user was a little confused.
	kaduk: Then I called in on Line 13.

	kaduk: I cleaned off several tables with water and towels because I
		noticed they'd become very dirty.

	jhawk: People should not leave our hole puncher set to 12" paper.

Other:

	dnawi: There's currently a working copy of an online transaction
		form for Cokecomm stuff, and it'll hopefully be represented
		on the fridge soon.

	quentin: Last week, we talked about how MIT's connection to Internet2
		wasn't working and was dropped.  The manager of NOX (Northern
		Crossroads) got back to me about what happened.  The table
		in NOX's router grew to exceed the router's memory, and
		accelerated the schedule for replacing the router.  He
		acquired something from Harvard's infrastructure to replace
		it, and did so.
	mitchb: So, is MIT peering with Internet2 again yet?
	asedeno: I believe so.
	quentin: *checks* Yes.

Other Other:

	kaduk: It's hot outside.

	mathmike: After 5 months, the Democrats now have a presumptive
		nominee.
	[some discussion about the difference between a presumptive and a
	real nominee]
