Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2008-08-25 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by price. In attendance were Voting members: price, mitchb, quentin, geofft, nelhage, neboat Associate members: asedeno Prospectives: biyeun, rhysh Guests: ghansel Officer Reports: price: It's Orientation. Welcome back to those of you who weren't here over the summer. nelhage: The Activities Midway is this Friday from 4pm-6:30pm. I'll be sending mail about it. We'll need a couple people to come hang out and talk to freshmen, tell them why SIPB is awesome, etc. jhawk: You often have to arrive fairly early to set up. nelhage: We will also probably have a pizza party this weekend. price: If you have strong feelings that it should be on Saturday versus Sunday, or vice versa, let us know. geofft: I reserved a room for stories with jis. Stories will be on Wednesday, September 3rd in 4-231, which is where it's been the last two years. The time is TBD, depending on whether we're having tours before that... it seems likely. Postering and announcements will happen when we have details. price: jis is a SIPB member, and the MITnet Manager. He has been for a long time. He likes telling stories, and is very good at it. SIPB Projects Report: geofft: We think we fixed the intermittent cron failures that the upgraded scripts servers have been having. We rolled back a patch in OpenAFS that jhutz identified. quentin: It has to do with code that invalidates cache entries, and then getcwd() failing due to the data having been removed from the cache. price: XVM is nearing launch. We've been working to get the production cluster up. We're going to migrate all user VMs to the new cluster. We're still figuring out how to do this without users noticing, but may have to have a scheduled outage. It may be finished, and up and running before Reg Day. rhysh: I've been working on lockerizing VLC Player, which plays lots of things. Possibly this will only really be useful for Athena 9. jhawk: charon's clock flaked by 800 seconds this morning unexpectedly. quentin: Does Solaris use a hardware clock, or do dead reckoning like Linux? jhawk: Like basically all UNIX-like systems, I believe it ticks the clock every timer interrupt. I wouldn't call it dead reckoning, but some might. Office Report: price: Those who were last here over a month ago might not notice, but those who've been here recently probably will see that things are back in order. The furniture dollys have arrived. geofft: We have a fax machine from Tim which was crufted from Random. It doesn't receive faxes to my knowledge. It puts a stripe down the page when sending faxes. I'd like to get rid of it, and maybe write something to have sipb-voip let you fax via uploaded PDFs or something. So, I'll be getting rid of it soon. quentin: Would you care to elaborate on what "soon" means, so that people know how long they have to lodge objections? geofft: Submit objections in the form of code for sipb-voip to do fax. Other: mitchb: Taking minutes on an IBM clunker is a stupid idea. asedeno: I love my IBM Model M. price: Sounds like you should trade. mitchb: What? Other Other: quentin: Freshmen are here. nelhage: And one of them is in the room. The meeting was adjourned at 19:40. Minutes taken and submitted by mitchb.
