Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2009-01-12 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by price. In attendance were Voting members: price, broder, xavid, nelhage, quentin, mitchb | jhawk kaduk Associate members: | belmonte Prospectives: ccpost, biyeun, sjlevine, LIST:s4m Guests: Officer Reports: '() SIPB Projects Report: price: We had a hackathon on Saturday. Much work was done, there were lots of people here, especially prospectives. There's an embryo of a new SIPB website sitting at sipb.mit.edu/wiki. Work is still going on with the design and code, but it should function, and people should feel free to edit it. afarrell: Dodona is going to be a zephyrbot you can ask questions about various topics and get further information. It keeps its data in XML. People can contribute data if they wish. The repository is in ~jhamrick/Public (it's a git repo). Look at the XML files; the structure is pretty obvious. Add info about various topics. Currently it just has one file about emacs. I'm going to port some of the residential computing documentation. If you want to work on the code, talk to jhamrick. price: You should mail sipb-office if you want everybody to contribute. xavid: At the hackathon, we spent some time thinking about various ways to sync Mailman lists to moira lists, and since then there's been some more discussion. It sounds like the plan right now is to get a proof-of-concept working on XVM involving special ACLs on lists involed (this part doesn't require IS&T buy-in). In parallel, we're going to talk with IS&T about more direct integration. broder: Integrating Mailman with moira on the backend looks like it may actually be fairly straightforward. price: fawkes wrote some new extensive documentation for AFS. xavid: You may have noticed that it's currently IAP. As we are wont to do, SIPB is running various activities. You should participate in them, and if you live in a dorm or FSILG, you should take some of these posters and put them up. nelhage: I gave a talk on extending barnowl today as an IAP class and the scripts will be going up on the barnowl website shortly. It should be a good intro for people who want to do neat things. price: People who want to work on such things should talk to nelhage or -c barnowl. Office Report: price: jhawk, you've ordered a new clock? jhawk: Uh, no. I've allocated money. price: Well, you've put tape on the clock making it hard to read. [more discussion about the tape and readability ensues] quentin: Cokecomm now has real food! [What kind?] quentin: Frozen food. kaduk: There's now hand lotion in the monolith that doesn't suck too much. Other: broder: Mystery Hunt is this weekend. broder: Athena 9.4.51/9.4.52 patch release goes out tomorrow night, which includes upgrading all cluster machines to Firefox 3. price: It also allows workstation screens to go blank when idle. broder: This could save up to $10,000 a year, supposedly. quentin: RT is broken and not processing mail. Other Other: jhawk: A bunch of FedEx drop boxes have appeared all around campus, making it easier to send stuff via FedEx. Also, Digi-Key is about to become an MIT partner vendor. broder: What does that mean? jhawk: It'll be on eCat^3, and we'll get a 15% discount. The meeting was adjourned at 19:39. Minutes taken and submitted by mitchb.
