Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 08-10-2009.


The meeting was called to order at 7:29:59 by kaduk.

In attendance were

Officer Reports:
	kaduk: Most of our officers aren't here.

SIPB Projects Report:
     	pweaver: Do we want to have computer stories on September
		 1st, 2nd, or 3rd?
	geofft:  September 1st is when the housing lottery results
		 come out, so that's probably not good.
	jhawk:   Traditionally we do stories the week after registration.
	pweaver: When I talked to Jeff, he said he could do the 1st,
		 2nd, or 3rd.  He also mentioned that he could do it
		 the following week.
	quentin: The 3rd is probably the best out of those days, but
		 after registration would be better.
	pweaver: Ok, I'll send mail and ask him about that.

	pbaranay: biyeun has finished the poster design for the Infinite.
		  I talked to CopyTech and they can print us a nice glossy
		  poster, sized 3.5'x3.5', for $97.  I'd like to allocate
		  $100 to purchase it.
	quentin:  That's kind of expensive.  CSAIL can print posters.
		  We could also talk to Kinko's.
	pbaranay: Ok, I rescind the motion so that I can look into other
		  suppliers.  There should be time to do this before the
		  beginning of term.
	belmonte: Is there any harm in doing the alllocation now, given
		  that you'll probably figure out whom we're buying from
		  soon?
	pbaranay: The cost difference could be significant, so I'd rather
		  not allocate now.

	pbaranay: ccpost and I have volunteered to co-organize Cluedumps
		  this year.  Please send us ideas for speakers/talks.
		  We will send mail about it later.
	kaduk:    You're going through previous years and minutes to get
		  ideas?
	pbaranay: Yes.

	nelhage:  I have a graph of data from the door sensor.  Someone
		  with more time than me should make a hilarious mathematical
		  model to predict when the door will be open.
	belmonte: Will the model involve Markov chains?
	nelhage: I hope so.

	quentin: XVM is running out of resources.  We sent out email to
		 users to get them to shut down and/or delete their unused
		 VMs.
	kaduk:   When you delete a VM, 0s get written to the disk.  This
		 causes problems when you delete 15 VMs at the same time.

	geofft:   We appear to have 26 open tickets fot the fall release
		  milestone on the Debathena bugtracker.  Please help by
		  reducing or increasing this number.
	jhawk:    [singing] A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, LMNOP...
	belmonte: John, you are the type of person that had me believing
		  that "elemenoh" was a letter when I was 2 years old.

Office Report:
	jhamrick: Three weeks ago, we put dollies under all of the filing
       		  cabinets.
	geofft:   We reoriented one of the cabinets, so it's less likely to
		  fall over.  It is now tending to lean backwards.
	quentin:  Perhaps we should make it better so it's not threatening
		  to chop your legs off if it falls.

	kaduk:    I have not seen any ants since the application of the
		  pesticide gel.  There still appear to be fruit flies and
		  similar creatures.
	jhawk:	  Has there been a report about them, or a focus on getting
		  rid of them?
	kaduk: 	  The occurence has been low, so no.
	jhawk:	  I reiterate that people should report sightings of bugs.
	belmonte: I brought a chicken kabob into the office and within one
		  minute noticed a fly buzzing around it.  I finished and
		  disposed of the remains in the bin in the gents toilets.

Other:
	kaduk:  There was some weirdness with the W20 network before the
		meeting started.
	geofft: It seems to be resolved.  I have one internet, but not all
		internets.  Actually, no, I have all of them.

	geofft:   On Friday, IS&T will be talking about our Twitter site.
	jhamrick: Ours?  As in, SIPB's?
	geofft:   Yes.
	nelhage:  We are apparently a shining example of how to use Twitter
		  as an organization.
	kaduk:	  Perhaps we are a shining example of how not to tweet every
		  two minutes and whether or not you've taken a bite out of
		  your sandwich, etc.

	jhawk:	  `kill -15 $$` won't work on yaz-pistachio.

Other Other:
	jhawk:	  I found a historic coke can on the nineteenth floor of the
		  Green Building and will give it to anybody who can convince
		  me that they should have it.
	belmonte: I remember that they were awesome.

	kaduk:    The metal part that comes off the top became a separate piece
		  of garbage and there was much controversy.
	belmonte: Every now and then, people used to choke on the pull tabs.

	kaduk:    We have invitations for the 40th Reunion party.  They have
		  been stuffed, sealed, and addressed.  They will be delivered
		  by nelhage to the Mail Services office for postage and to get
		  mailed.
	belmonte: There were two missed calls from Mail Services in the call log
		  this morning.
	geofft:	  I believe the graph of when they are open is very shifted
		  from when we are open.

	kaduk:	  There was a heat advisory this afternoon.  Apparently it was
		  very warm.
	geofft:   That's hot!
