Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2011-10-17 The meeting was called to order by dwilson at 19:30:00. In attendance were Voting members: ezyang kaduk achernya davidben phurst geofft bbaren cesium Associate members: jdreed tlyu quentin asedeno | jhawk Prospectives: jontec vzh steb lapentab dlaw | mprat madars Administrivia ============= Project Updates =============== davidben: BarnOwl 1.8 has been released. Logging is asynchronous. If^WWhen AFS falls over it will not hang quite so badly. geofft: Speaking of AFS falling over, Linerva was down. We took a BIOS update. It also disables the TLB. [achernya: This bug shows up in dual core?] I have no idea. [asedeno: Does this have anything to do with the new BarnOwl?] jdreed: Cluedump tomorrow for people who are interested in working on Debathena! Debathena is awesome and will not suck you in. It's in 3-133 at 7:30PM tomorrow. It's also a get involved event. vzh: Next week's cluedump is same room, and at 8PM. Edward Yang will be talking about Scripts. achernya: Edward and I wrote an awesome Python script and pull/push credentials on and off servers on Scripts. [geofft: How much easier does this make the Scripts Cell challenge?] Doesn't make it any easier. geofft: IS&T is vaguely looking at something involving Drupal and web hosting, and they talked the Scripts team about what it means to run a free hosting service, and how much does it suck to support users. [quentin: That really was their first question.] Other ===== jhawk: On April 30th, a local astrology firm sued the maintainer of the timezone database; so the database was taken offline, and now the IANA is doing something with it. But it's kind of bizarre that it's an astrology company. jdreed: A public scanning station in W20, at the end of the first row. Use it, send feedback (see the paper on the wall.) The glass goes right to the edge of the scanner, so you can put a book at an angle. USB, Google Docs and Email. SFTP coming soon possibly. Its future is dependent on student feedback. [geofft: Is repeatedly scanning a black square fair game?] I hate you so much. bbaren: Can we allocate $200 to replace the decrepit office chair. [quentin: $200 is not sufficient for a desk chair, probably $800] [jhawk: It might be under warranty] [kaduk: We have two other chairs of this fashion which are broken.] kaduk: Our scanner kind of sucks right now. The color tone is different as you move horizontally across the page, which is really ugly. [achernya: Waseem still owes us a scanner.] kaduk: There is a checkout of FreeBSD source tree in freebsd locker in subdirectory 'head'. Updated nightly. Other Other ========== geofft: Fedora 17 is named 'Beefy Miracle.' Ubuntu is 'Precise Pangolin'. [bbaren: Cross between an ant-eater and a stegasaurus] afarrell: Dennis Ritchie was found (sic) dead on Oct 12, of K&R fame. [quentin: You mean died.] davidben: Flash 11 was released: 64-bit. You should not be using nspluginwrapper anymore! meeting adjourned at 7:38. Minutes taken and submitted by ezyang.
