Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2012-04-16


The meeting was called to order at 19:30:00 by bbaren.

In attendance were

Administrivia:
	achernya: Apparently we don't have CPW planned.
	bbaren: Correct. We have a Midway booth, but nothing else
		planned and no events. Oops. We need volunteers to man
		the Midway booth; this involves chilling out at the
		SIPB booth and generally looking badass and competent.
	dwilson: When is it?
	jhawk: 1-3 PM on Saturday.
	bbaren: We'd like 4 to 5 people, and 2-3 people an hour
		beforehand to move stuff. If you're interested, see me
		after the meeting. Additionally, we may want to have
		actual events, but these won't happen unless we move
		really fast. Past events: tours, uh...
	quentin: Block party.
	dwilson: Aquarium tours.
	lapentab: Haven't they published the schedule, so might it not
		be that advertised?
	bbaren: Yes.
	quentin: On the other hand, isn't everything online these days?
	bbaren: We can beg to be put in the schedule. Is anybody
		interested in making CPW events happen?
	lapentab: I'd like to do the 'everything you've ever wanted to
		know about computers' panel.
	achernya: We should have an allocation for food. What did we
		allocate last year?
	bbaren: The chair would smile upon a $500 blanket allocation
		for snacks, printing, other related costs.
	quentin: Second, white ballot.
	jhawk: How much did we spend last year?
	bbaren: I don't know. Does anybody?
	dwilson: I don't know officially.
	jhawk: I don't object, but would suggest limiting to $250.
	achernya: Reasonable.
	bbaren: The motion is to allocate $500 with a spending cap of $250.
	achernya: Second.
	[Motion passes, white ballot.]

SIPB Projects Report:
	bsw: zephyr-mobile is getting close to a beta release; our
		goal is 5 PM tomorrow. We've decided to continue using
		SQLite but we do a whole-file lock and we're not going
		to have more than one server per user.
	bbaren: sipbv6 had an outage; one of Occaid's Boston routers
		rebooted and did not have our tunnel information saved
		in non-volatile memory.
	quentin: This makes you wonder how long it's been running
		given that it's existed for 5+ years.
	bbaren: The parts of campus that were not on IPv6 were not for
		about 12 hours. Everything should be back to normal;
		if not send mail to sipbv6@.

	achernya: About a year ago scripts purchased 2 servers. I'd
		like to replace linerva since it has horrible memory
		problems; I'd like to allocate money for a pair of
		$2700 servers in the next week or two.
	bbaren: Isn't Linerva a VM now?
	achernya: It is.
	bbaren: Would this be going back to a physical server?
	quentin: It has a dedicated physical host.
	bbaren: What's scripts' growth rate been in the last year or so?
	achernya: We'd like to replace the HP servers. Had Linerva not
		needed new hardware I would've allocated the same to
		replace the servers.
	bbaren: So this would be an allocation to upgrade, not replace.
	achernya: Yes. Ever since we put in the new machines, we've
		seen an increase in stability, but we can only run one
		VM per physical host. New machines would let us run 4
		VM per host, 2 production 2 dev.

	achernya: I got a Droid 4, and it came with an Ubuntu
		chroot. It has 'web top' which lets you plug in a
		monitor and get an X display with GNOME and
		everything. I'd like to try this out in the next week.

	jhawk: 16GB SD cards are $15 at SwapFest and they come with
		free Android phones. That's not how they're marketed.
	quentin: $15 seems cheap for either of those.
	
	bbaren: The office is still messy. There is a lot of stuff on
		laptop land that probably should not be; please clean
		it up.
	jhawk: This is my fault.
	quentin: Are you volunteering to fix it?
	jhawk: Yeah.
	achernya: Speaking of, how do we feel about getting long power
		strips?
	bbaren: I'd be in favor of it providing we keep at least one
		squid.
	quentin: We have a bunch in the machine room.
	achernya: Yeah, I'm saying use one of those.
