We did stuff, hopefully it'll be merged soon. We almost got perlvariables working, necessary for better AIM/Jabber implementation. quentin: I apparently have been nominated to ask for money on behalf of Scripts. We're asking for about $8,000 for three new servers to improve our performance and to use money at the end of the fiscal year. dwilson: Does this just include 3 servers, or KVM?? quentin: No, that's separate. I was given $7925.21. glasgall: Second. quentin: 8 cores/server @2.4GHz, 48GB ram, and a couple TB of disk. All per server. jhawk: I feel like this is not the way we ought to be deciding how to spend this much money. quentin: OK. asedeno: How much money do we have left? kaduk: That's an interesting question. I ran numbers last week and came up with about $7,800, I ran numbers this week and came up with $8,600 left. A few weeks ago, there were $9,200. jhawk: Do we understand the difference? kaduk: No. jhawk: Algorithmical or data-based? kaduk: I don't know. asedeno: Wild theory, we have the account that rolls over and the one that doesn't. Did anybody sum them? kaduk: Less wild theory, if we run out of money from the expiring money, we can use the non-expiring money. quentin: Or not, if we go slightly over. Some people think this is the correct thing to do. We need to spend this money now so that it arrives by the end of the fiscal year. mats_a: I was about to propose an allocation for a power strip-- quentin: That's a power strip, don't bother. jhawk: Unless it's over $100, don't bother. jhawk: I want the exact thing we're buying, and the range of possible things we could buy that would satisfy the needs of the service. quentin: I do have exact part numbers, I don't know if they comprise the exact $7900 quote. jhawk: Ideally, this wouldn't take place in realtime at the meeting. It's not like the fiscal year is some big surprise. glasgall: Right, achernya and mitchb have been working on this since the last meeting. kaduk: I think it would be irresponsible to not see if there were other substantial allocations. dwilson: Are there? quentin: I'd like more KVMs in the machine room, since we're out. I was going to propose using the leftover. dwilson: Will we have enough time/a good enough idea of the budget in order to fill it with KVM? quentin: I was going to go to the nearest $100. kaduk: I think $100 is well within slop. dwilson: Any more >$100 allocations? kaduk: I hear Apple upgraded specs on most of their hardware, and I believe csw is old. jhawk: The iMac hasn't been upgraded. glasgall: Could we take delivery of it in time? jhawk: Yes, they're shipping now. quentin: Would we want an MBP? jhawk: To have a retina display. quentin: It seems likely that they'll bump the iMac with a retina display. I'd rather have an iMac than a chained laptop. [Motion on the table, floor, or other flat surface passes 6-0-3.] dwilson: Tell us about power strips. mats_a: I'm not sure if it'd be better to do it this year or next. I didn't want to make a specific proposal, I just wanted to throw the idea out. quentin: Then it's definitely next year. mats_a: I'd like one very huge power strip spanning this length (from the L-junction in laptop land to the edge nearest the glass wall). I was going to propose a $50-$100-ish strip unless anybody has any objections. quentin: I'd suggest getting one where the plugs are in parallel. kaduk: The tables that comprise laptopland do have hardware for mounting things under them. I've been toying with the idea of constructing trays for putting stuff under them. This would be more for the strips and not the squid. jhawk: Well, the squid sucks, you need to use a lot of leverage. dwilson: Any other allocations at this meeting besides KVMs? OK, KVMs. quentin: We believe we have ~$700 left. Is that a good summary? kaduk: That is an estimate of what we have left. quentin: Unfortunately the KVMs compatible with the one we bought 3 years ago are no longer manufactured, but they have a slightly newer model. Even if it's not it can be used separately. A 16-port KVM is $418, and some number of adapters are $50 apiece. If we're going for $700 that's 6 adapters, or $750 for 6 adapters+cables. kaduk: We already have 2 parallel KVM setups? quentin: We have one 16-port and one 4-port with two devices. What's your point? kaduk: I'm saying it wouldn't be terrible to have a third. quentin: $750 for one 16-port KVM, 6 adapters, and assorted cables. dwilson: Second. [Motion passes 5-0-4.] quentin: It's so easy to spend SIPB's money. quentin: Mirrors is down, I don't know why yet. mats_a: Bed, the programming language, 's parser is coming along. jhawk: Granola is back, thank you for the loan of it.
