NOTE: These are DRAFT minutes until this note is removed. ========================================================= Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2013-10-07 The meeting was called to order at 7:30:00 by dove. In attendance were Voting members: dvorak42 cereslee dove sqshemet tboning dwilson btidor presbry vasilvv phurst codetaku Associate members: jbarnold glasgall achernya Prospectives: elubin belzner dzafaen Prosepective Prospective duncant jselover k_sunter jhurwitz Administrivia: glasgall: I have consent from a large number of old SIPB numbers willing to give up drawers in back filing cabinets. Will be cleaning them out and making them available. Allocation will be full members first, followed by associate members. I see no reason not to make a dedicated prospective drawers. dove: Keep area as is, or IKEA? glasgall: Depends on running the math. I want to take stock of what we have and make plans before making decisions. dove: I nominate belzner for membership. She's worked on cluedumps this year, IAP publicity in the past. [Motion passes] dove: I nominate k_sunter for membership. She is working on cluedumps, worked on Debathena. [Motion passes] Prospective Introductions: '() Project Updates: tboning: There was a wildly successful security/CTF hackathon. 25-30 people were in the office. Went over some of the smashthestack and hackthisssite exercises. A lot of fun. Got to meet some poeple, a lot form the security club. We will hold similar events in the future. achernya: SQL had its first replication failure in ages. Not entirely sure why. Solved the problem by deleting the database, because scripts demo. glasgall: XVM went something like a month without a cluster outage. dove: ALL the uptime! glasgall: Work on libt4, future replacement for clvm, continues. elubin: I'm coordinating IAP talks. I havne't done anything, but come talk to me if you want to give a talk. I was told to tell you all that IAP is sooner than you think glasgall: Not sure why, but my terrible idea proiject to port Debathena to OpenSolaris has a build machine and is continung work. Codenamed horrible idea in my head. Not sure why I'm doing it, but going to keep doing it. achernya: For context, the build server has 50% CPU power of a Chromebook. glasgall: It's a spare sunfire v10, name is neutron-star. dzaefen: Comment re:hackathon. It's been quite a while that we've been talking about SIPB looking more attractive to prospectives. Agreed that most is speculation. But I would like to suggest a thing that does keep people away. I, as a person who is not very familiar with material in the hackathon (not the only one), we got very minimal help from people who actually knew what they were doing in terms of guidance. If that was the first thing in SIPB that I went to, if it were not for the fact that I was already frieds with SIPB members, that would have scared me away. Know from experience that there is another club on campus, I went to a hackthon, did not know anyone, was basically left there trying to figure out what to do. It lead to me not joining until a long time later. Seems like everyone is expected to come in knowing all sorts of stuff. dove: Good advice. This hackathon was an experiment. tboning: Agree. Most of the blame falls with me. I was planning on more intro stuff, but didn't have time to test activities or write up an intro lecture etc. due to psets, basically. dove: Also more people than expceted. tboning: It ended up a little more widely publicized. Next time I run one othese, going to get some more help, 'cause big thing. glasgall: I suggest that hackathon material be a good cluedump tboning: Or a graduate-level course. dove: It's computer tours and story time. Tours lead by jweiss and zacheiss. It was a lot of fun. Story time, as usual, was awesome. Went from 8pm to midnight when jis had to go home. There was also a YCombinator infosession. Paul Graham was there. It was cool. achernya: I finally managed to get EMC to send me an FTP link for isilon update. Turns out entirely competent BSD system, entirely competent command line, entirely competent test. In about 50 minutes the update was completed, and now it's processing data. glasgall: They're going to send guy with magic badge to open the box? achernya: Nope, have to upgrade AGAIN! In about a week. We're running v5, new ones are v7. Can't upgrate directly, have to go v5 to v6 to v7. glasgall: There's a new isilon in boxes in W91. It's been sitting there since July, only to be opened by a certified isilon technicion, or the support contract is void. achernya: New isilons include SSDs. We're expecting to double capacity from 20TB to 40TB. achernya: If you're interested in maintaining isilon and mirrors, talk to me. I'm going to organize a mob. It looks pretty cool. It's kind of hard to tell what they have from pictures. dove: Any excuse to mob is a good excuse to mob. On that note, anyone want to go see Gravity in I-max on Friday at 7pm-ish. If you decide last minute to be there, yell applesauce. Go wherever you here a reply. achernya: If you would like to see the legendary applesauce, machine room tours after the meeting. Other Other: codetaku: At the rate they're going, the Red Sox will be in the semis after today. achernya: After a series of bad decisions, Steven convinced me to do a Cokecomm run.
