========================================================= NOTE: These are DRAFT minutes until this note is removed. ========================================================= Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2013-10-28 The meeting was called to order at 19:30:00 by dove. In attendance were Voting members: achernya btidor dove dvorak42 glasgall ianucci jbarnold lapentab phurst presby vasilvv Associate members: jdreed jhawk Prospectives: ambhave asuhl dzaefn jogama Guests: Administrivia: dvorak42: I talked to Gary, and I'd like to propose a small allocation for dinner with Garn and some of the student maintainers to get to know each other. achernya: Gary and anyone else? dvorak42: Gary is the only one I've reached out to so far. [ strange looks exchanged between achernya and jhawk ] dvorak42: I'd like to propose an allocation [ ianucci: *whoah*]; that's about 10 student maintainers and 3 IS&T people, given Mary's prices. [Second and white ballot; motion passes ] jdreed: Adam and I made another trip to IKEA for the rest of the original office furniture allocation. I heard objections to the table in the back being removed, but it's not permanently lost: one of the removed tables is in the hallway (feel free to bring it back), and the other is in my possession and can be gotten back with a week's notice. jdreed: I propose an allocation for $275 to get the inverse of the table by the door to replace the far table perpendicular by the wall while also looking nicer. jdreed: Also, during the cleanup we found out we have two of every kind of stapler. jhawk: ...different size staples... jhawk: I'd like to note that it's nice to be able to stand on tables when futzing with the light fixtures. jdreed: The new tables have a weight limit of 175 lbs. jhawk: How much of the original allocation did we spend? jdreed: $1200 jhawk: Does the length of the end table change when you replace it with the IKEA one? jdreed: [ gives figures (roughly, the length increases) ] jdreed: Actually, to update the allocation, the mirror image table to put at the end might be $350, maybe. jhawk: I think you should wait while we figure out what we want to do with this space and how our needs might be better served (do we prefer sturdier tables?) ianucci: I'd like to note that the old tables have their legs welded to the top, so tables with loose wiggly legs have a cracked weld, which is difficult to fix. jdreed: The wiggly-legged table is out in the hall. ianucci: I question if our existing tables are (a) in good condition and (b) sturdy enough, given the peeling/chipping formica, etc. jdreed: Also note that the IKEA table has a rounded inner surface, so it's actually possible to sit inside that corner. glasgall: And it's possible to join the IKEA tables together with metal thingies to make them more stable; we've already done this with some of them. jdreed: [ formally updates the motion to $350 for the purchse of the mirror image of the table by the door to fill the space at the other end ] [ second and white ballot; objection; vote passes 5-3-? ] dove: I think it would be useful to send mail about this. I know this is a continuation of a longer project about which mail was sent earlier, but it's been a while and it might be a good idea... jdreed: I don't intend to go to IKEA sooner than 3-4 weeks from now. dove: I wish we'd planned this out more in advance; I've heard complaints from a number of people. Not to slight what has been done already, but better communication would have been better. glasgall: We apologize for the loss of the end table; we didn't realize it had been getting so much use, and we'll put something like it back in its place. ianucci: There is a Great Dark Spot swirling across the SIPB floor. It turns out that elbow grease and solvents have vaguely worked. It would be nice if we got some actual carpet cleaner, but anyone who can spare some elbow grease could virtually eradicate the Spot. ianucci: Another thing I wanted to mention is that this carpet has a number of issues [ points out fold, tear ]... replacing the carpet isn't really that expensive, and it might be Facilities' responsibility to pay for it. dove: I'm worried about the logistics... jhawk: (Last time) we evacuated the entire office, and took the opportunity to paint it again. dove: Where did you move everything when evacuating the office? jhawk: ...I don't remember. dove: [ notes the fridge ]... dove: I am generally in the mindset that this carpet sucks, and if we can pull off the logistics... ianucci: Can we replace it tile-wise? glasgall: Facilities might charge extra for that. ianucci: [ will send mail ] SIPB Projects Report: glasgall: XVM is interested in people! Come talk to me. glasgall: Apparently I'm not the only one interested in a Solaris Athena project. Come talk to me. achernya: Because EMC continues to suck [ secretary objection ], the hardware upgrade to Isilon did not happen last week. I'm sending mail to nag the Certified Senior Project Manager about getting us a Certified Senior Box Opener. jogama: We still need more teachers for the IAP classes on Ruby on Rails and Modern Programming Design. If we don't get teachers, those programs just aren't going to respond. We mailed people who taught last year, but nobody responded. Please respond. Email elubin@mit.edu... achernya: Planning for Caffeinated 6.828 is ongoing. We're trying to figure out what flavor the course will take on and should talk to Anne Hunter right away and see if we can grant credit. glasgall: Oh yeah - XVM has gone another week without a cluster incident, which still continues to astonish me. ianucci: The stapler on the outside of the door frame continues to jam perodically [ sad face ] New Prospective Introductions: '() Other: glasgall: I understand that congratulations are in order for the SIPB Lincoln Labs CTF team. dvorak42: I'd like to clarify that it wasn't solely SIPB members. dove: Could you explain the event for us? dvorak42: Lincoln Labs held a capture-the-flag game where you have to attack and defend services. We ran a team with dvoark42, tboning, cereselee, kaufmand, ... After very little sleep and 48 hours, we got first place. dove: Do we get to see the flag? dvorak42: It's currently in Random; a permanent home is being discussed. jdreed: FYI, in late May or early June, the Building 12 will close permanently. The number of public Athena workstations will drop below 200...We're working on a proposal to completely revamp W20-575 to make it look like something not from the 80's, with small group workspaces, cafe tables, bar-height workstations for quick use, possibly a reservable seminar-style space for students... Anyone who has any interest, talk to me or Victor. This will be discussed at ISTAB this Wednesday. dove: What are the plans for the space in Building 12? jdreed: The building will be demolished. jhawk: Will IS&T be getting that space back? jdreed: No...Building 12 will be the site of MIT's new nanofabrication facility.
