Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2014-01-06

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 by dove.

In attendance were
Voting members: achernya cereslee codetaku dove dvorak42
		dwilson phurst tboning
Associate members: btidor davidben geofft glasgall jhawk
		jmorzins
        Prospectives: elubin jselover kacquah riled
        Guests: riled Will Vahley

Administrivia:
davidben: We should do something about sipb0's password,
because it's not the usual one for silly reasons.
achernya: ITYM we should fix the sipbn password scheme.
	davidbean: Yeah, sure.

jhurwitz: I'd like to request SIPB sponsorship of the Bad
Ideas Python Bee in the form of $150 of prizes. This
		has been done historically.
jhawk: How'd it go in the past?
jhurwitz: I don't know; I participated and I thought it went
well, though it did drag on a little.
achernya: This will be the 3rd time SIPB's sponsored this?
	jhurwitz: I think so.
	[Motion is white-balloted.]

achernya: omalley1 wanted me to say that the Python IAP class
has had over 100 students sign up, so he's looking for
people willing to be TAs. You don't have to do prep,
you just need to be able to answer Python questions
from 5-7pm on the 13th, 15th, and 16th. Check the IAP
calendar for the schedule. If you're willing to help,
		e-mail him at omalley1@mit.edu.
dove: How did we deal with figuring out how many people are
		going to attend?
cereslee: There was an e-mail asking people to tell us if
		they're interested.
achernya: We've already exceeded the room capacity.

SIPB Projects Report:
glasgall: Caffeinated 6.828 starts tomorrow at 7pm; if you
can't take 6.828 by way of graduating before it's
		offered, it's strongly recommended, though
		time-consuming.
tboning: You can also take actual 6.828 after taking 6.S184,
Franz is explicitly OK with that.

achernya: XVM had a disk cluster outage, nobody noticed
because we're out of disk anyway.

Other:
?: IS&T has a contest over IAP for developing a Drupal cloud
module. There are info sessions Tuesday, Wednesday,
and Thursday, about $10K split between
		1st-3rd. There's info at drupalcloud.mit.edu/iap.

jhawk: IS&T has a vice-president again. Once again, SIPB has
indirect representation on the Academic Council.

dwilson: We should consider inviting the new head of IS&T to a
		meeting.
dove: We're working on it. We should probably have an EC meeting.

jhawk: I hear the IAP people are being a lot more rigorous
about statistics about IAP attendance. Do we have
		anything to say about that?
emma: We're going to try to collect attendance ourselves as
		well, because it's pretty useful.

achernya: Static site generators are kind of horrible.
glasgall: This was discovered by the 6.828 course staff.

jhawk: The W20 cluster is closing for most of the month of January.
achernya: We will be given keypad codes.

jhawk: The W20 electrical shutdown that was cancelled because
of the storm, so it's going to be rescheduled.

geofft: I want to have a PGP keysigning at some point, I'm
suggesting two weeks from now after the meeting.
	jhawk: It's bad for asheesh.
geofft: I can sign his key at some other point.

Other Other:
	glasgall: It's a new year.

codetaku: It's the first day of IAP.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:42.
