Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2018-03-19 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by alvareza. In attendance were Student keyholders: alvareza, slz, nchinda2, mcyoung, bpchen Associate keyholders: '() Members: rsthomp, twang6, incematt, sargentd, npfoss, wmoses, amigdal, ivanaf, kevin21 Guests: '() Administrivia: '() Project Reports: mcyoung: If you have been paying attention to sipb-office, I've had a really bad idea this week. [description of roost] However the current implementation has a few problems, and not the least is that it's written in node.js. I kinda want to fix this, mostly because it's fun, but because I make really poor choices about what to do with my time. I'm deciding between writing it in Rust and Go ... In the direction of Rust, I've written a Kerberos library in Rust ... so if you're interested in knowing about Kerberos, and how large-scale systems work... [twang6]: So why didn't roost take off? mcyoung: [stuff about roost] [demonstration of roost] mcyoung: Anyway, I really want to get more people on zephyr, and I think barnowl sucks. So this is why I'm doing this. If you're interested in learning more about this, let me know. alvareza: We have talked to the administration about LibrePlanet, and I'm pleased to announce that the FSF will not be charged for the space they use this year. This may not be the case in future years, and we will talk to the FSF to figure out plans for the coming years. So everything seems to be going according to plan right now. npfoss: ... First one is, the thing I talked about last week isn't happening because it doesn't exist. Another is I talked to Edward Fan, the guy who made Firehose, and we decided that it would make sense to combine these two together. [We want to make it work on all devices] ... Of course, we'll make an effort to make sure it stays more maintained [than its predecessors]. wmoses: Will you keep previous courses to allow people's hopes and dreams to be crushed ... ? npfoss: We will [import old data]... To see someone's hopes and dreams be crushed they'll have to allow that. mcyoung: I think it'll be very nice to unify all these things... because this keeps popping up every few years and it'll be really nice... if SIPB has control over it. ... npfoss: The thing that's wrong with Planner is that it doesn't have a student maintainer, and we'll fix that in this new thing. npfoss: Oh and FireRoad is a thing that [...] made ... it's really nice. mcyoung: I think you should support a *real* operating system. Like Windows! slz: So this time I'm actually looking ahead and realized that Debathena [needs maintainers] ... so if you're interested in Debathena and want to see it not die ... mcyoung: Lizhou, what's Debathena and [why is it dying]? slz: [description of Debathena] ... [I might organize a hackathon later on, preferably before 18.04] ... mcyoung: What's the name for 18.04? slz: I think it's Bionic Beaver [or something]... Other: mcyoung: This Athena for Faculty thing has been around for several years... [I was looking at it and wow] it's typeset in [Caralino]! wmoses: Walmart filed a patent for robotic bees, thus showing that the Black Mirror apocalypse is one step closer. slz: An Uber driver killed a pedestrian in Arizona. [It's certainly a coincidence] ... mcyoung: [attribute] [Rust] [expand macros] [more esoteric Rust stuff]! rsthomp: Tomorrow at [...] there will be a discussion on the Computational Thinking GIR and you should [go there and] express your feelings! ... mcyoung: I think you should express your feelings even if you're busy, [other people will express their feelings] ... Other Other: slz: Spring break is next week. alvareza: It's also midterms week! wmoses: CPW is also sooner than you think? mcyoung: We're getting the fourth nor'easter in the spring equinox, [apparently it's] this wednesday? The meeting was adjourned at 19:44. Minutes taken and submitted by mtheng.
