Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2018-04-16 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by alvareza. In attendance were Student keyholders: alvareza, cela, mtheng, mcyoung, bpchen | slz Associate keyholders: andersk Members: elefthei, wqian94, wmoses Guests: '() Administrivia: mcyoung: I would like to nominate Billy Moses for keyholdership in the Board. Billy helped out in CPW and also many partial projects for SIPB, which hopefully will bear fruit, such as working on the SIPB ISP and the Pheonix group, which has more [disk space] than you can shake a stick at. bpchen and cela: Seconded. wmoses: [Accepts] Project Reports: wqian94: CPW is sooner than you think. cela: The IP renumbering process continues! I sent out lots of annoying email asking people to... If you received one of this emails, please respond! Otherwise I'll have to [send you more emails]. cela: I created a repository on Github to store our todo list for the SMR and the server rooms. If you need something done for the SMR, you should file issues... also if you want to make SMR a less horrible place, you should [check out this list]. wmoses: CPW was a thing. We should talk about all the things that went well and things that did not go well... hopefully we'll have a lot of frosh in the future. elefthei: Yeah, there were some good things and some bad things that happened... the good things were as Billy said, and the bad things were that no one brought their laptops for the hackathon, or the PGP signing... which should be something we should note for the next CPW. mcyoung: Or just figure out how to [not require laptops] for events. wmoses: Some things could have been better set up... elefthei: Luckily we have [...] now, so we can write this down for future generations! wqian94: Apparently a lot of people thought the Athena cluster was [our office] [because of the banner]. alvareza: We could consider repositioning the banner. wmoses: Or just like an arrow... Other: wqian94: If you really wanted an Other, neither Lef nor I can add or remove SSH keys on MIT's Github. mcyoung: You should file a report with the service desk. cela: SIPB continues to run a Mastodon server that you should join and use! mcyoung: Or you can join the clusterfuck of Discord servers. Which are bridged! With Zephyr! The best bridge! wmoses: Project update, you can add SSH keys to MIT Github. Other Other: wqian94: MIT news accidentally published their article on the death of... mcyoung: ...I was promised a monsoon but got a drizzle. But apparently there was a monsoon this morning. However, I was asleep at this time. wqian94: Boston marathon is sooner than you think. alvareza: I feel really sorry for the runners. wqian94: An American woman won the [...] race for the first time in 30 years. wmoses: Microsoft published their own version of Linux. mcyoung: What is it called?! wqian94: Last Wednesday Mark Zuckerberg [...] in front of Congress... it was actually pretty cringeworthy. mcyoung: You still follow humans? cela: A real human. With pituitary glands and everything. mcyoung: ...Ted Cruz and Mark Zuckerberg. The greatest crossover in history. The Zodiac Killer vs the Zuck. wqian94: ... cela: We could use the $100 million much more effectively here at SIPB. wqian94: Seconded. Election: cela: Who are you? elefthei: Hi! My name is Lef, I'm way too old, I came back to MIT to do my Meng... I do stuff with computers, I do stuff with computer security and other stuff... does that answer your question? cela: What projects have you worked on for SIPB? elefthei: I worked on CPW... with Billy, I worked on Hyades, back in the day I had a patch on Debathena and a patch on Scripts... it has been four years pending... alvareza: Can you name anything that is in the "in case of fire" box? elefthei: Yes. Frisbees, one-time pads, and printed paper... I want to say non-perishable snacks... alvareza: I'm not sure of that. [checks] These are the one-time pads... oh there's a torchlight though. wqian94: I guess... no, those are perishable. cela: Why are there one-time pads? And, more importantly, why are they opened? elefthei: The one-time pads are used to establish a segregated society... why are they open? Because... we are not good at doing things, apparently? cela: No. Achernya isn't here, so we can't get the story from the original source. So back in the day there was a flaw in [Kerberos] and the flaw is that allowed people to use the master key to break the KDC... the one-time pads are labeled "to be used in case of cryptographic emergency", which is what happened... for that matter, don't store passwords in AFS that you care about. bpchen: What's your favorite book in the SIPB bookshelf? You can take a look if you want. elefthei: I like the Unicode version 4 book, because I always look at it and I'm not too sure... I like the Haskell books, I like the compiler books... bpchen: Do you want to pick one? (I might get this wrong.) elefthei: Do we have the Sussman book here? It's gotta be here. alvareza: It has to be here. elefthei: [finds it] alvareza: Please put your right hand on the book, and raise your left hand. Do you solemnly swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth? elefthei: Swear to God? to Sussman? alvareza: Yes, to Sussman. elefthei: I swear. alvareza: Are you, or have you ever been, a member of the Student Democratic Society? elefthei: Yes, def... wait no, definitely not. alvareza: That's good enough for me. mcyoung: I would like you to close your eyes, and name all the things you can on Laptopland. elefthei: There is... [lots of things] cela: How do you double-space a SIPBW event? elefthei: I want to say... spacing 1.5? Yeah I don't know. wqian94: Give a step by step description of how to make boba tea from scratch. elefthei: First acquire the proper tools. mcyoung: Then explain why some of them don't have lids? elefthei: [complex technical instructions] wmoses: What's the difference between a person's beard and an operating system [?] elefthei: A person's beard isn't long enough to write an operating system... wqian94: What's your favorite letter of the Greek alphabet? elefthei: Lambda, for obvious reasons. mcyoung: What is something about SIPB that you really like and what is something that you'd like to change? elefthei: I like that we learn about computers and we learn about stuff, I like that there isn't a lot of competition between members that we can talk and learn about stuff... What I don't like is the whole situation with [...] The people who own them are probably dead. mcyoung: Have you been to the end and back? elefthei: Yeah. mcyoung: I have another question for you. It's one of my favorite questions. Name all of the processor architectures you can in this room. elefthei: ... The VT100 has a rasppi in side that has an ARM... v5 or v7... everything else is like x86-64 I guess... mcyoung: I would argue that many processors here, since they are running recent versions of Chrome, are running [...]. wqian94: I think Miguel just validated Javascript as a modern architecture. Can this be noted in the minutes? mcyoung: ... LLVM only needs to target two things... x86-ARM, MIPS and something else. wmoses: Why is that light bulb turned off? elefthei: They are changing the rods? wmoses: I don't actually know the answer to that one. slz: That just means we need to file a work order. In fact, I'm creating a service request right now. mcyoung: Actually while you're at it Lizhou, can you make a work request for one of the lights in the SMR as well? wqian94: Also this light is flickering. alvareza: Speaking about filing work orders... would you be interested at all in being, like, office czar? elefthei: I mean I could, but... mcyoung: Remember Lef, anything you say can and would be used against you. elefthei: I can make the situation better for the members, or... wqian94: What day was Easter this year? elefthei: I think it was a Sunday... I would like to say last Sunday, or the one before... I'm Greek and we have our own Easter, so I want to say April 2nd... or... wqian94: Can it be noted in the minutes that Billy does not think [...] is a real Easter. wmoses: What is your favorite syscall? elefthei: It's gotta be link, because it's more permanent that the other ones... it does great damage... bpchen: You might have noticed that we haven't had a lot of elections recently. How would you suggest SIPB could improve the bringing-members-in-getting-them-socially-integrated process? elefthei: There's two parts to that I think, the social part, you've just got to be friendly, and don't shout at the computers when the freshmen are here, Miguel. mcyoung: I feel called out. elefthei: And there's also the [technical] side, like we talked about last week where we could [lower the barrier] for Hyades, ... wqian94: ...What would you like to conduct your work on here at SIPB? elefthei: I do like the projects we're working on... In terms of new projects, I don't think... one think I wanted to do was a social network for MIT running on top of Hyades... encrypted data... which is nice [given] Facebook... but realistically I'm going to be working on features and fixing bugs for Hyades. bpchen: Working on that, do you have any thoughts on [privacy in social networks] that people have written over the years? elefthei: ... Diaspora... it can run anywhere, it can run on MIT... you can choose who will see your data, you can encrypt it... slz: Did we ask about the box? cela: Yes, we asked about the box. We should the ask The Question. alvareza: Mark... cela: The "Q" is capitalized. slz: We are solving the halting problem. alvareza: Miguel, do you want to ask? mcyoung: So Lef, why do you want to be a SIPB keyholder? elefthei: I want to get involved with more things in SIPB... being a keyholder as a graduate doesn't have much in terms of... I can not-be-in-my-room... [keyholders leave the room] mcyoung: Can we have something like that printed out for the SMR? alvareza: I'll figure it out. mcyoung: Cel, what is martryr-of-the-falklands? cela: I don't know. mcyoung: Have you considered unplugging it to see who yells? cela: NO! mcyoung: [n-c] But did you know? Salt is worth its weight in salt! [non-canon: dramatic music plays in the background] in favor -- opposed -- abstain 8 -- 0 -- 1 [elefthei is elected as keyholder] The meeting was adjourned at 20:20. Minutes taken and submitted by mtheng.
