Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2018-08-27 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by alvareza. In attendance were Student keyholders: alvareza, emmabat, cela, ikdc, mtheng, rsthomp Associate keyholders: andersk, glasgall Members: amigdal, efjepsen | wqian94 Guests: sharonl Administrivia: alvareza: Welcome to the SIPB meeting. emmabat: SIBP. rsthomp: To get reimbursed for publicity stuff, do I get an RFP? emmabat: Yes. You don't have to know the cost object, you just send it to me. But if you are curious about the cost object, or what they are, I think the information is in the Treasurer's wiki. cela: During the summer, in order to develop Hyades, I used [...] resources. I was wondering if we could allocate $20-30 to reimburse me for this cost. emmabat: Sure, as long as you have the receipts. glasgall: Seconded. alvareza: Motion to white ballot. [allocation of $30 for Hyades computing resources passes.] alvareza: The vice chancellor has reached out to SIPB because he is creating a new committee to create recommentations for a new [learning platform] for [MIT, like Stellar]. He would like SIPB to be involved in this so that the students would have a greater say on what would replace Stellar... and so if you're interested in representing SIPB in this committee, please let me know and send me an email and I would forward you some of the information... Also, SIPB has been emailed about remaining LAMP hardware in building 9. If you have some time later this week and would like to move some hardware... emmabat: I'm mostly free in the afternoon. alvareza: I think it's [...] so it's very heavy. cela: Bring a cart. alvareza: So let me know if you're interested in moving some hardware, and we'll arrange to do it later this week. cela: I threaten to help with that if no one does. cela: If you want to help with Hyades, you can contribute by moving hardware so I don't have to. emmabat: That's the essence of Hyades, right? ... glasgall: That's [what] distributed computing is, right? emmabat: ...SIPB is the Hyades mascot. Project Reports: cela: We were continuing to work on Hyades, kind of, now with the construction portion of Rush over, that's more! The good news is that we're one or two features away from deploying a production cluster. It won't be a great cluster, but it would be usable. ... There's the user authentication module, and once we're done with that we should be able to just spin this up... cela: For Hyades to be of any use, we need Ceph. Has anyone announced anything about Github's load balancer...? ...Spike is useless. We just need to integrate that, which will be... fun! emmabat: Another question is, what level of expertise is necessary to be helpful with Hyades? cela: What is needed is to be able to read documentation for a complex system and use it... it sounds simple, but for complicated systems, it's hard... knowledge of programming languages like Python and Go would be useful... and also general knowledge of systems. rsthomp: Those aren't very useful requirements... emmabat: I would be interested in helping... glasgall: [...] would reduce the frequency of RAID problems. We also replaced a failed disk earlier this week, which would also reduce the frequency of RAID problems. XVM hasn't had a failure since [...] emmabat: The good news is that we found an exact number for the standing allocation for the disks. glasgall: Interestingly, if you would like a computing infrastructure that isn't maintained by old people like me, you should help with Hyades. wqian94: Rush is sooner than you think. Activities Midway is on [...] at 2.30... well maybe not the whole office show up at once, but... emmabat: Why don't we take the whole office and put it over there? wqian94: I also have a semi-final draft of the pamphlet... this will form two copies, front and back. wqian94: If people would like to do a last read-through of it before I send it to the CopyTech... cela: Did you include the thing about how to find the Office of [...] number? Because we've gotten lots of requests from people to make that known. ikdc: Just Google it? cela: You'd think. emmabat: I'm surprised that's not the millennial approach to everything. alvareza: You'll also need the cost object for the CopyTech stuff right? emmabat: It should be on the Internet, under Treasurer. cela: If you don't have access, make sure you do. emmabat: I only know the LAMP cost object off the top of my head. It's a palindrome, so. cela: For the record, I want to say that this is an awesome poster. [everyone agrees] emmabat: We have a cuter mascot than TechX. wqian94: If anyone has opinions on pamphlets, they will be here in the office. cela: Speaking of mascots, can we get a human-sized fuzzball suit? emmabat: You can find a way for us to get one. wqian94: That sounds scary. rsthomp: I would like to say thank you to whoever left a... it's not a DVI cable, but it's a bunch of cables in the electronics cruft box. glasgall: It looks like cables from the cable store. alvareza: There's also a bunch of prototype boards. The way I acquired this is through the trash to treasure thing, they were having an electronics rummage sale in the stud and I got this last year. rsthomp: So what we're trying to collect is sort of electronics prototyping stuff that people in the office can use to facilitate more of the hardware electronicsy stuff that SIPB can do... glasgall: Before buying lots of stuff, I cannot recommend more getting [boxes that we can label]... for bulk orders like [...], Digikey etc... cela: [Maybe we finally have an excuse to decommission Multics.] glasgall: Multics is unfortunately too new to do interesting stuff with. ikdc: [...Mattermost...] cela: One thing we want to do is to fix up all the office heads, like running newer versions of Debathena, and hopefully [automate] this. If anyone is interested, you should come talk to me. Other: '() Other Other: cela: It's still Rush. cela: East Campus built a three-story fort. It's one of the reasons why Hyades hasn't happened much. glasgall: It's going to be 300 degrees... drink lots of water. emmabat: And then there's going to be a thunderstorm... wqian94: Donald Trump was not invited to John McCain's funeral. As a result of a lot of spat, the white house issued a press release about John McCain's [...] and all that and Trump was like nope. wqian94: There's currently a petting zoo going on in McCormick. emmabat: We better end the meeting now, then. The meeting was auctioned off to the highest bidder at 19:52. Minutes taken and submitted by mtheng.
