Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2019-09-02 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by emmabat. In attendance were Student keyholders: alvareza, emmabat, cela, mwnguyen, yczeng | gshay Associate keyholders: quentin Members: zackpi, kjchen, kgarner, nambranth, jkoppel Guests: tjz, cflc, jtdinsmo, mrittenb, klajdi, fsdi321, bds, rihn, jnoguera, jmvidal, samferg | ahmadtak Administrivia: emmabat: it is exciting to see all of these faces, we will see more next week. I will give a spiel about SIPB, We are the Student information processing board, we are the oldest student run computing group at MIT, we do all sorts of things for people relating to computing at MIT, I hope you all can find some things that might be interesting to you. We do education, such as IAP classes and cluedumps. alvareza: cluedumps will be happening, we will be running a cluedump which is a dryrun of a rust workshop that will be happening at Strange Loop, It will be happening in 3-333 from 5:30-7:30pm, emmabat: this semester we are trying to form an advisory committee at IS&T, we work on courseroad, scripts, the SIPB wifi project, I am excited to seeing what we will do this semester. To try to help everyone find some project that they may be interested in, we will be running a mentorship program. I have sent out a survey, I am hoping to find the older members that know about the project you are interested in. jnoguera: how much experience do you need to be involved? emmabat: we have a number of projects with varying degrees of experience, many should be accessable to most students. I didn't know anything about this stuff when I joined. emmabat: we have a different membership model than most clubs, you can all be members right off the bat, but if you do something like furthering the goals of SIPB, then you can be nominated and elected to keyholdership, there are many perks of becoming a member. Also, members can vote on a number of propositions. kjchen: what are some of the goals of SIPB that could be furthered? emmabat: we have three main avenues that we do, outreach, teaching, and technical work, however we also have a number of support roles, and we wouldn't function without them. These are all examples of how you can further the goals of SIPB. ses cela: does anyone know what happened to the KVM that was delivered may 24th? We didn't recieve it but supposedly it was delivered. It was like $500. If you know what happened to it, please let me know. emmabat: the SAO never followed up, so we are slightly concerned. quentin: the week of tuesdays is the annual time that marys takes a vacation. emmabat: Everyone who wants to join SIPB should find a member and ask to be memberized. cela: I would like to make an allocation for the domain sipb.cloud which I renewed in june for $23. [motion to white ballot, the allocation passes] cela: we had the allocation from bbaren that was about the [] emmabat: we wanted to also potentially fundraise for it. cela: the alums were pushing hard for it to be a big event. emmabat: We are planning to have talks and panels from alums, we have reached out to them, we now we need to schedule times for them to talk. zackpi: I can do it. emmabat: nice. yczeng: I want to contextualize, we have a lot of alums that have contributed to the history of computing, thats why the 50th will be a big thing. emmabat: I will do some story time: [story about the founding of SIPB] quentin: The origin was that the name of our parent organization was the Information Processing Center, so we were the student information processing board. alvareza: motion to allocate for cluedump snacks, $20 [motion to white ballot, allocation passes] yczeng: can I nominate zackpi for keyholdership? emmabat: seconded, zackpi, do you accept the nomination? zackpi: yes. Project Reports: cela: hwops: I found out that the windows on the server room have been covered in a translucent things, we should figure out if we can get them removed, because being able to see into the server room is pretty cool. jnoguera: what is a mainframe? emmabat: [explanation of the mainframe], if you are interested in our server room you can contact sipb hardware ops. gshay: I think nate has been giving progress reports on courseroad, we are looking for a new member so we aren't stuck in the same situation, where the only person maintaining emmabat: last week I had a meeting with marco gomez and other IS&T people about the SIPB wifi project, and they seemed pretty supportive, but they want us to make a good write-up for it so we can show it to the administration. If you are interested in writing proposals which is something you will need to do to get grants, then maybe you will be interested to join. cela: scripts has been doing stuff over the summer, we have been runnning on fedora 20, which is 10 versions out of date. We are working on changing over to the current version of fedora, we currently need help with migrating to the new version. Other: emmabat: For the new members, a sipb meeting has 4 parts: Administrivia, project reports, other, and finally, other other. mwnguyen: zoom had that weird security vulnerability. jkoppel: you may have heard about how the mac webcam can be activated without the light, well the circuit was changed, cela: apparently the twitter CEO got hacked, and he had SMS twitter enabled. quentin: about a week ago, MIT changed all their DNS servers, change your mwnguygen: jkoppel: google cloud had an issue.
